Episode 24: THE HAND (1981)

This week's movie was written and directed by Oliver Stone (BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, PLATOON, NATURAL BORN KILLERS) and stars Michael Caine (THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, JAWS: THE REVENGE) as an artist who loses his hand in an auto accident, and said hand then returns to go on a killing spree.

It's fun to watch these two Hollywood legends - with five Oscars between them - in this well-made film with a very B-movie subject.

It's being hailed as part of the new wave of Canadian horror movies along with Anthony Scott Burns’ COME TRUE and Shawn Linden’s HUNTER HUNTER. Starring Andrea Riseborough (MANDY, BLACK MIRROR), Christopher Abbott (IT COMES AT NIGHT), and Jennifer Jason Leigh (SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, THE HATEFUL EIGHT).

This week's episode sees us back in the days of the Old West for 2105's Bone Tomahawk. This Kurt Russell-starring gem was written and directed S. Craig Zahler. It also stars Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, Lili Simmons, David Arquette, and Sid Haig. Bone Tomahawk is funny, heartwarming, witty, and brutally violent.

This week we're covering the Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes and Raiders of the Lost Ark) written and directed Silverado. Silverado has one of the best casts of all-time, including Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Rosanna Arquette, Brian Dennehy, Linda Hunt, Jeff Goldblum, Jeff Fahey, and Richard Jenkins. Whew!

It's episode 20 and we're traveling across the 8th dimension to review The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. It's campy '80s sci fi with Peter Weller as the title character who is a physicist, a brain surgeon, a test pilot, and a rock star. Weller is joined by John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Llloyd, and Clancy Brown.

This week, we watch our first vampire movie for the show, 1988's bonkers Nicolas Cage movie, Vampire's Kiss. This one is allegedly a comedy, but we beg to differ. It does, however, feature an over the top performance, which is common in Nicolas Cage movies. The cast of Vampire's Kiss also includes Maria Conchita Alonso and Jennifer Beals.

For this week's episode, we take a trip into black and white arthouse horror with The Lighthouse 2019. The Lighthouse movie features incredible performances by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, and was directed by Max Eggers, who also directed the 2015 arthouse film The Witch.

This week's episode sees us back in the creepy world of David Cronenberg for the second week in a row with 1983's "Videodrome". The Videodrome cast features starring roles from James Woods and Debbie Harry of Blondie fame. This was a first time watch for one of us, while the other has seen it many times.
