The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.” — Jonah 1:6

Jonah slept while the ship broke apart, but the call comes to you: Arise, for this is not your resting place. Set your mind on things above—the hour has come to wake from sleep; salvation is nearer than when you first believed. The Master is calling.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Psalm 119:105

You don't need to see the whole road—just enough light for the next step. The commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and your ears shall hear a word behind you saying, "This is the way, walk in it" (Isa. 30:21). Jesus said, "I am the light of the world; whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness" (John 8:12). Open His word and walk by it.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. — Psalm 23:5

David had enemies around him, but he sat at a table prepared by God. Taste and see that the Lord is good—His mercies are new every morning. All things are yours, and you are Christ's. Your cup doesn't just have enough; it overflows.

You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as on a seal: HOLY TO THE LORD. — Exodus 28:36

The words “HOLY TO THE LORD” were engraved on the high priest’s turban. Without holiness, no one will see the Lord. Our righteousness is like filthy rags, yet by grace we’re called to be holy as He is holy. Jesus sanctified Himself so you also might be sanctified in truth. Draw near to the Holy One who welcomes you to the throne of grace.

I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom wears a priestly headdress, as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. — Isaiah 61:10

He has clothed you with garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness. Bless the Lord at all times and let anyone cheerful sing praise. Your circumstances may not call for joy, but your God does.

“Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were cut, and to the quarry from which you were hewn. — ISA51:1

Remember where you came from: you were brought forth in iniquity, cast out with none to pity you—but God said, "Live!" (Ezek. 16:5-6). While you were still weak, Christ died for the ungodly. Never forget the pit; it makes the grace all the more glorious.

While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work. — John 9:4

Jesus lived with urgency because His time was short—and so is yours. The fields are white for harvest, so preach the word in season and out of season. Paul worked harder than all of them, yet not him but the grace of God in him. Work hard, but work from grace, not for it.

The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction of My people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their oppressors, and I am aware of their sufferings. — Exodus 3:7

God isn't a distant observer; He knows your pain intimately. He was a Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, and we have a High Priest who can sympathize with our weaknesses, tempted in every way as we are. Your suffering is not hidden from Him—He sees, He knows, and He cares.

Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. — Isaiah 46:4

God doesn't make you and abandon you—fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine. Like an eagle carries its young, He carries you, and nothing can separate you from His love in Christ Jesus. He made you; He bears you; He will save you.

The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with loving devotion. — Jeremiah 31:3

God's love isn't a reaction to something lovable in you—it's the initiating cause of everything good. He chose you from the beginning for salvation, saved you by His own purpose and grace given in Christ before the ages began. Not because we loved Him, but because He loved us first.
