Psalm 119:113-120 rejoices in the concept of Covenant Loyalty. The meaning and power behind a covenant agreement was God’s idea from the beginning of time. Adam and Eve lived under the protection of God’s covenant promise in the second chapter of Genesis. So long as they obeyed God’s covenant they would be blessed by God’s presence and his protection.

In the Gospel we have a New Covenant. The difference is that God’s covenant through Jesus guarantees success that is not dependent on humanity. Jesus himself will see to it that this New Covenant will be kept through him. God sees those in his covenant as being hidden and protected in Christ. The obedience necessary to enter this New Covenant is that of saying, Yes, bowing the knee and receiving God’s gracious gift. Then, all believers learn to live out the path of Covenant Loyalty as described in Psalm 119:113-120.

God has condescended to use human beings to bridge the gap that that exists because of the fallen nature of all of humanity: You will be for me a kingdom of priests (Exodus 19:6). Therefore, prayer is an outworking of God’s plan of redemption. All believers have the awesome responsibility to live up to our high calling as priests.

Why pray? God has invested his power in the people who are called by his name. In his wisdom he has called people out of this world through his plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. Now, God allows those very people to represent him and share in the responsibility to bring his redemptive power into this fallen world. Why pray? Here’s another question: Why NOT pray?

Adam and Eve lived under the blessing of the completed work of God. This blessed state was not merely one day a week, but every day. Every day was filled with the joy of unbroken fellowship with each other and with God.

That blessed rest was lost in The Fall. As they chose to remove themselves from the covering of God's completed work, the freedom gained led to the slavery of sin and death. Through Adam's sin all of humanity was thrust out from under the completed, perfect work of God. The good news is that God would bring redemption through the sacrifice of Christ. Jesus proclaimed from the cross, It is finished! Now all may enter God’s finished work and find rest in Christ.

"Peter came to Jesus and asked, 'Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" (Matthew 18:21). We can be thankful for many of Peter's interactions with Jesus. Through Peter we can see ourselves. And through Peter Jesus would give a demonstration of forgiveness that transcends human nature. The natural tendency is to hold a grudge. It sounded like Peter was counting his grudges up to seven. Thank God, that in Christ, we can stop counting.

Jesus wants his people to have a heart of forgiveness. Forgiveness is a very unnatural thing to do. The natural remedy is to construct strong defenses. Strong defenses and potent armaments do well in the warfare of this world, but we are called to a different war altogether. Our battle is a spiritual battle. We win when we bow to Jesus.

No one would ever say that to give positive, protective instructions to those we love as being bigoted. Loving and responsible parents intolerantly place boundaries around their children because they want to love and protect them.

For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
