  • Allie Anderson: Millennials Most ‘Connected’ But Lonely Generation

    Play Episode

TODAY’S GUEST – Allie Anderson-Henson is an author and credentialed private investigator who oversees the research arm of SkyWatch TV and Defender Publishing. Her exploratory works have appeared in numerous books, documentaries, magazines, and television specials. Her new book, Unscrambling the Millennial Paradox: Why the Unreachables May Be Key to the Next Great Awakening, probes deeply into the issues of modern society’s young adult population, revealing the shocking reasons that they are leaving the church today.

On today’s podcast we discuss the skyrocketing suicide rates among teenagers and Millennials and the many reasons for high levels of anxiety, depression, and isolation. This is the most “connected” and technologically advanced generation, but also the most disconnected when it comes to community and personal relationships. We also touch on the communication gap between Millennials and the older generation, the identity crisis, and why so many young people have left the church.

    Book description on Amazon:

“Millennials. It seems the very mention of the word draws equally passionate and polarized responses from people of all ages. With labels such as The Unreachable Generation, The Me Me Me Generation, and The Worst Generation, it is no wonder that our young people are the most notorious this world has ever seen.

But beneath the surface, crises linger which drive an individual to wonder what is really going on within the minds of our youth. Suicide rates among this age group have escalated to an all-time high, while drug and alcohol abuse-related conditions have become top reported killers. Simultaneously, this populace is leaving the church by the scores, while the New Age, Wicca, and Islam grow in popularity.”

Unscrambling the Millennial Paradox: Why the Unreachables May Be Key to the Next Great Awakening

Are Millennials really the narcissistic, self-centered, entitled, and lazy collective that they are accused of being, or is there a deeper problem lurking which creates division between this generation and those previous? Are young people of today truly the worst the world has ever seen, or has our modern church missed the opportunity to reach the most cause oriented, activist generation in the history of the world?

Crash and Dave Wager cover one of his teachings from Silverbirch Ranch on the 4 D’s of Biblical Leadership. If you can’t follow, you can’t lead biblically.  “Power is only valid if it is used for the benefit of somebody else.”

    Scripture references:

    Matthew 4:19, 2 Timothy 1:13, 1 Peter 2:21, John 10, 1 Cor 9:27, 2 Timothy 1:7 and Titus 1:8

  • Chris Quintana: Politics, Pelosi, Trump, and the Middle East Peace Plan

    Play Episode

It’s the debate that won’t go away: should Christians be involved in politics? This just leads to more questions. What do you mean by “involved,” and what issues do you say are political? What issues do you say are moral? And what about the so-called separation of church and state?

What about pastors and church leaders? Should they discuss politics and government – and should they do it during church services? (some of you gasp!) After all, like we discussed yesterday with Julaine Appling, someone’s morality will be legislated and our government is supposed to be of the people and for the people. Then there’s the confusing question of whether someone can follow Jesus and support Donald Trump. Wait, what?

But it’s hard not to notice the downward spiral of morality in what is often referred to as our post-Christian culture. This doesn’t necessarily mean the church is dead and gone, but all polls and surveys pretty much confirm the fact that Christians are not effectively influencing government and society any longer.

TODAY’S GUEST – Pastor Chris Quintana joins us to look at recent events in America and Israel through the lens of Scripture. Lots of “P’s” to tackle today: pastor’s perspective, politics, Pelosi, and peace plans. Chris is the senior pastor at Calvary Chapel Cypress in California.

    SCRIPTURES

    Ezekiel 33:1-6

Now as for you, son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a message from My mouth and give them warning from Me. 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand. 9 But if you on your part warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life. Ezekiel 33:7-9

Hate evil, you who love the Lord, Who preserves the souls of His godly ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Psalm 97:10

Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. 27 And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.” Daniel 9:26-27

For behold, in those days and at that time,
When I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 I will gather all the nations
And bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat.
Then I will enter into judgment with them there
On behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel,
    Whom they have scattered among the nations;
And they have divided up My land. Joel 3:1-2

  • Friendship Over Truth?

    Play Episode

There’s an old saying, “politics makes strange bedfellows,” but these days professing Christianity, government, and worldliness also seem to be aligning more often, developing very strange partnerships.  We’ve seen so-called “Celebrity pastors” often embrace Hollywood stars or elite sports celebrities who claim to be Christians, but they often do so without a modicum of discernment or wisdom, causing more confusion in a a church that is confused enough already.

In our final segment today we look at a resolution passed by the Democratic Party that applauds “non-religious Americans” while disdaining Christian churchgoers. Our guest today is Don Veinot of Midwest Christian Outreach. He joins Mike and David to discuss how friendship seems to be more important than truth to a growing number of Christian leaders, and how heresy is on the rise in the church itself.

    Referenced:

Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore, be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. Acts 20:28-31

Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. Hebrews 5:11-14

Democrats Pass Resolution Applauding ‘Nonreligious Americans,’ Criticizing Churchgoers

The Democratic National Committee passed a first-of-its-kind resolution Saturday recognizing the “ethical soundness” and “importance” of religiously unaffiliated Americans while contending such voters “share the Democratic Party’s values.”

The resolution – passed at the DNC’s summer meeting – was championed by the Secular Coalition of America, an organization that lobbies on behalf of atheists, agnostics and humanists in public policy. The coalition said it was the first time the party had “embraced American nonbelievers.” It passed unanimously absent one abstention, the coalition said.

“[T]he religiously unaffiliated demographic represents the largest religious group within the Democratic Party, growing from 19% in 2007 to one in three today,” the resolution says. “

  • The Battle for Our Hearts and Minds

    Play Episode

Jesus taught that the greatest commandment was that we love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind and soul.  In today’s busy, fast-paced world there are many things bombarding us, fighting for our hearts and minds; distractions that take us away from glorifying and enjoying God.  What are some of these distractions? Money, social media, politics, leisure, and entertainment just to name a few.  And every one of these can demand our attention, passion, or loyalty.  Some will go to great lengths to assure that they become the “masters” of our lives.

John Loeffler of Steel on Steel radio joins Mike and David to look at the power behind the institutions that vie for our attention and loyalty these days.

Here are some of the things we discuss on today’s  program:

“In essentials unity; in doubtful matters, liberty; and in all things charity.” This has been shared by Christians for centuries and there is some biblical wisdom in it. But churches and denominations have grappled over what are the essentials and non-essentials of the Christian faith. What do you believe are the non-negotiable essentials of salvation?

Skillet’s John Cooper rightly calls out apostates and watered-down doctrines that have produced weak Christian leaders, but some believers say Skillet’s music is not even Christian and criticize them for playing secular rock festivals. (Chime in on our Facebook page!)

    • Christian Churches Skipping Faith Formation?

      Play Episode

As we see more young people and leaders abandoning the Christian faith, it is important we assess their thought process and motives in doing so. (They are taking some followers with them and away from the truth.) To simply argue about whether or not they were ever truly converted believers can be unproductive.

The reality is that many younger people either want nothing to do with historical, Biblical Christianity or they are finding churches and denominations that are redefining and diluting Christian doctrines to line up with their worldly values and philosophies.

In our final segment today Mike and David share a thought-provoking perspective from John Stonestreet of BreakPoint about why this is happening and how we might address it.

In segment 1, we have a discussion about what so-called Liberal Christianity is and how it is infecting a growing number of churches and denominations. We connect with author Dan Jensen. His excellent book is titled A False Kind of Christianity.

Dan Jensen offers the conservative Evangelical community a no-nonsense assessment of the growing, aggressive progressive Christian movement. He provides his personal testimony, a short overview of the history behind the progressive Christian movement, a brief summary of its teachings, and clearly elucidates the fact progressive Christians possesses absolutely no biblical foundation. This movement must be countered by conservative Evangelicals.

    • Addressing the Problem of Mental Illness and Depression

      Play Episode

Over the past several years, as violence has escalated in our nation, the topic of mental illness has been front and center.  Now the call is to make sure people suffering with mental illness have their legal firearms confiscated before they put others in danger.  As we will discuss in our final segment this rush toward “Red Flag Laws” is fraught with dangers as it has yet to be determined how one is classified as “mentally ill”.  We cover a story from Psychology Today that indicates people who are “fundamentally religious” should be considered “mentally ill”.

But first, many Christians who struggle with anxiety or depression make the medical community the first place they visit to receive help.  And often they find their problems only grow worse because the advice they receive is not based on the Word of God.  Dr. Ab Abercrombie of The Biblical Counseling Institute joins us to discuss the need to develop biblically based Christian Counselors in the local church to help Christians who struggle with anxiety, grief or depression.

    • The Changing Role of a Pastor

      Play Episode

Vibrant, bible teaching churches are needed more than ever but are so very hard to come by. We need wisdom, biblical knowledge and understanding of God. We also need to show our nation the dangerous path we are on as a nation and people.  But many churches seem intent on conforming to the ways of this world instead of transforming lives by the power of God’s Word.  At a time when we need clear biblical direction we seem to often be lacking in in a growing number of churches.

It usually starts with leadership – pastors who preach the Word and set the example for the flock.  Our guest, Pastor Randy White, joins us to discuss how pastors are being educated and influenced in today’s Christian Seminaries and Bible Colleges, and why that needs to change if we are going to see a true spirituall revival in the church and our nation.
