Today we continue our study of Helaman 1-6. We consider what Mormon teaches us about the process of changing through the Spirit and we reflect on the importance this focus has on helping us avoid the pride cycle. 

Monte S Nyman: “The persecution and affliction came from within the church, but the formula to turn these negative conditions into a growth pattern is given to us by Mormon. The first step of the three step formula is to ‘fast and pray often’ (v. 35).... The second step of the formula is to become stronger in humility (v. 35).... The third step of the formula is to become ‘firmer in the faith of Christ’ (v. 35)... Through the above formula, the people’s hearts were purified and sanctified... Thus the persecutions and the afflictions, although difficult to endure, brought them to rely on the Lord...and helped them become firmer in their conviction.”

Repentance is the great enabling principle of the gospel: when your faith in the Lord causes personal change, such action on your part, as Helaman states, ‘bringeth [you] unto the power of the Redeemer, unto the salvation of [your] souls’. As you seek to change, remember that our loving Savior, as Alma states, has ‘all power to save every man that believeth on his name and bringeth forth fruit meet for repentance’. This is powerful, liberating, hope-filled doctrine!”

Today we continue our study of the cyclical process of pride amongst the Nephites. We consider how this cycle was avoidable and we reflect on the blessings of prosperity. 

Boyd K Packer: “There are those within the Church who are disturbed when changes are made with which they disagree or when changes they propose are not made. They point to these as evidence that the leaders are not inspired...

Two things characterize them: they are always irritated by the word obedience, and always they question revelation. It has always been so. Helaman described those who ‘began to disbelieve in the spirit of prophecy and in the spirit of revelation; and the judgments of God did stare them in the face’ (Helaman 4:23). ‘They were left in their own strength’ (4:13), and ‘the Spirit of the Lord did no more preserve them; yea, it had withdrawn from them(4:24).'”

Joseph Fielding McConkie and Robert L Millet: “Frequently the first reaction to the word prosperity in the Book of Mormon is the concept of temporal blessings, or the ‘good things of the earth.’ Undoubtedly, such prosperity can be linked to some degree with righteousness. The context of this prosperity, however, makes it clearly spiritual in nature and linked to the blessings of the Church membership resulting from faithfulness. It is important that we not think of prosperity only in terms of material gain.”

Today we begin studying the new book of Helaman and we begin with the turbulent first chapters. We consider the damaging effect secret combinations had on the people and we reflect on the danger that pride has on our progress. 

H Donl Peterson: “The Book of Mormon declares that the origin of such murderous conspiracies can be traced back to Lucifer through Cain, ‘who was a murderer from the beginning.’ Following their strange, quasi-religious meeting, the successful conspirators dispersed to their various ordinary pursuits, blending into Nephite society in such a way that the government could find only some of them. So religiously—if we may use that word—did they keep their oaths, that many of the group, including Kishkumen himself, remained at large.”

A thing, an event, or an expression may be offensive, but you and I can choose not to be offended—and to say with Pahoran, ‘it mattereth not.’”
