Today we continue our study of Alma 44 and 45 as we learn the fate of Alma and see how the Church is reestablished among the Nephites. We consider how the role of spiritual preparation was just as pivotal in these war chapters and we reflect on the lessons learnt from Amalickiah's influence. 

Lynn D Wardle: “In Moroni’s day it was not merely the secular authorities (generals and chief judges) who established the peace. The high priest of the church, Helaman, worked closely with Moroni to quell dissent. Before the lengthy Nephite-Lamanite wars began, he tried to set the church in order because the dissensions that soon were to plague the nation were evident in the church. Just as Moroni, the great general, prayed and preached powerfully, Helaman, the great prophet, took up the sword and led an army (the 2000 stripling warriors). The establishment of peace did not merely mean that the Lamanites were defeated, but also that the gospel was widely preached.”

Monte S Nyman: “Preparation is the mark of a good leader. To be prepared requires anticipation of the future, and Captain Moroni was always prepared for war against the Lamanites. As the account continues, the Lamanites copy the Nephites innovative methods, but we will see that Captain Moroni was a step ahead and always prepared with some new methods of defense that the Lamanites had not anticipated. On the other hand, the Lamanites still used their basic age-old customs of warfare. They relied on the arm of human strength while Captain Moroni relied on the Lord”

I’m going to meet them soon.’ To close the temples would deny all for which all those Brethren gave everything, but we really had no other alternative.”

Elder D Todd Christofferson: “Having satisfied the demands of justice, Christ now steps into the place of justice; or we might say He is justice, just as He is love. Likewise, besides being a ‘perfect, just God,’ He is a perfect, merciful God. Thus, the Savior makes all things right. No injustice in mortality is permanent, even death, for He restores life again. No injury, disability, betrayal, or abuse goes uncompensated in the end because of His ultimate justice and mercy.”

Today we continue with our study in Alma 42. We consider the wonderful doctrine taught in this chapter and we reflect on the importance of the laws of justice. 

Elder Quentin L Cook: “Alma 42 contains some of the most magnificent doctrine on the Atonement in all scripture. Alma helped Corianton understand that it is not an ‘injustice that the sinner should be consigned to a state of misery.’ But he noted that starting with Adam, a merciful God had provided a ‘space for repentance’ because without repentance, ‘the great plan of salvation would have been frustrated.’ Alma also established that God’s plan is a ‘plan of happiness.’”

Without the spirit, the body is dead (see James 2:26). It is the spirit, therefore, that chooses good or evil and will be held accountable for both the positive and negative attributes it possesses at the Final Judgment (see Alma 41:3–7).] . . .Your spirit, coupled with and housed in your body, is able to develop and manifest these attributes in ways that are vital to your eternal progression”

Today we continue our study of Alma's teaching to his son Helaman. We consider the power of humility in sharing what we do or do not know about and we reflect on the glory of resurrection. 

Joseph Fielding Smith: Deformity will be removed; defects will be eliminated, and men and women shall attain to the perfection of their spirits, to the perfection that God designed in the beginning. It is his purpose that men and women, his children, born to become heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ, shall be made perfect, physically as well as spiritually, through obedience to the law by which he has provided the means that perfection shall come to all his children

D Ogden Kelly and Andrew C Skinner: “Alma was a model of a perceptive father who is trying to counsel with and bless his son, and, through the inspiration available to all parents, he began to zero in on Corianton’s real issue—a profound doctrinal question. Why was Corianton ‘worried concerning the resurrection of the dead’? Because if a person claimed that there is no life after this one and no resurrection to live forever, that reasoning could be used to further justify sinning: Live it up here in mortality; go after whatever your body wants here in this life because there’s nothing afterwards. It was important for Alma to resolve his son’s doubt”
