Dieter F Uchtdorf: “When Alma compared the word of God to a seed, he explained that the seed grows into a fruit-bearing tree gradually, as a result of our ‘faith, and [our] diligence, and patience, and long-suffering.’ It’s true that some blessings come right away: soon after we plant the seed in our hearts, it begins to swell and sprout and grow, and by this we know that the seed is good. From the very moment we set foot upon the pathway of discipleship, seen and unseen blessings from God begin to attend us”

Join us today as we begin the study of the wonderful analogy of faith being like a seed. We consider how faith can indeed begin with a sincere desire and we reflect on the ways this faith grows. 

Craig C Christensen: "Some people speak of a testimony as if it were a light switch—it’s either on or off; you either have a testimony, or you do not. In reality, a testimony is more like a tree that passes through various stages of growth and development. Some of the tallest trees on earth are found in Redwood National Park in the western United States. When you stand at the base of these massive trees, it is amazing to think that each one grew from a tiny seed. So it is with our testimonies. Although they may begin with a single spiritual experience, they grow and develop over time through constant nourishment and frequent spiritual encounters . . . This is often how a testimony begins: with sacred, enlightening, assuring feelings that demonstrate to us that the word of God is true. However, as wonderful as these feelings are, they are only the beginning. Your work to grow your testimony is not done—any more than the work of growing a redwood tree is done when the first tiny sprout pokes out of the ground. If we ignore or neglect these early spiritual promptings, if we do not nurture them by continuing to study the scriptures and pray and by seeking more experiences with the Spirit, our feelings will fade and our testimonies will diminish."

Today we begin to study the rich doctrine taught to the Zoramites. Today we consider how we can choose to be humble and we reflect on what this humility can lead to. 

Rodney Turner: “Spiritual humility—the recognition of one’s dependence upon God for all things temporal and spiritual, coupled with a willingness to accept his law—is a precondition for true repentance. Some achieve this humility only after they have been ‘compelled to be humble’ by those ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’ of which Hamlet soliloquized. Some do so only after they have been brought face-to-face with the stark truth about themselves and the God they defied, or never knew.

“Some will never learn humility and, therefore, never repent even when they stand before God with a ‘perfect knowledge’ of their guilt and uncleanness.”

May we hope for schools where students are taught—not terrified they will be shot—and for the gift of personal dignity for every child of God, unmarred by any form of racial, ethnic, or religious prejudice. Undergirding all of this is our relentless hope for greater devotion to the two greatest of all commandments: to love God by keeping His counsel and to love our neighbors by showing kindness and compassion, patience and forgiveness.

Today we conclude our study of Alma 31 with Alma's heartfelt, inspiring prayer. We consider what we learn about prayers that have great impact and we reflect on the power of Christ's enabling and strengthening Atonement.

I bear you my witness that through the companionship of the Holy Ghost, the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ will cut through the confusion, the pain, and the darkness. Whether it comes in a remarkable burst or in a gentle flow, that glorious spiritual power will infuse healing love and comfort into the repentant, wounded soul; dispel darkness with the light of truth; and cast out discouragement with hope in Christ. We will see these blessings come, and we will know by the witness of the Spirit that it is the Lord Jesus Christ working in our lives. Our burdens truly will be ‘swallowed up in the joy of [our Redeemer].’”

In a sense, pride is the original sin, for before the foundations of this earth, pride felled Lucifer, a son of the morning ‘who was in authority in the presence of God.’ If pride can corrupt one as capable and promising as this, should we not examine our own souls as well?”

Neal A Maxwell: “Notably, at the last day the adversary ‘will not support’ those who followed him anyway. He cannot. Jesus will triumph majestically, and the adversary’s clever constructs, ‘pleasing to the carnal mind,’ will also collapse, and ‘the fall thereof will be exceedingly great’. Even now, one can see in the lives of those prodigals who come to themselves the devil’s doctrines dripping in early meltdown. Many, having experienced the utter emptiness of the lower ways, are ‘in a preparation to hear the word’ and now await being informed of the rescuing revelations and translations.”

Join us as we continue our study of Korihor, today moving into his confrontation with Alma the High Priest. We consider how Alma reacts to Korihor's methods and we reflect on how we have many evidences of there being a Supreme Creator. 

Gerald R Lund: “Alma takes Korihor’s own philosophy and catches him in a trap of his own making. Korihor teaches that we can know only what we can see. (See Alma 30:15.) But when questioned, Korihor categorically denies that he believes there is a God. . . . Korihor is not consistent in his own thinking. If we truly can know only those things for which we have empirical evidence, then we cannot teach there is no God unless we have evidence for that belief. And Korihor has no evidence”

Today we continue our study of Korihor's teachings and claims. We consider how we can identify Korihor’s philosophies in the world today and we reflect on the how commandments, whilst they may be viewed as restrictive, can bring great blessings.

Joseph Fielding McConkie: “Korihor claims the protection of law in a free nation to teach the doctrines of disbelief, disrespect, and disobedience. He attempts to convince people that they are in bondage, for if he can successfully do so they will naturally turn to him as a liberator or redeemer. His then is a liberation movement. He is going to free them from the burden of commandments and gospel commitments. Whereas the gospel declares that the knowledge of revealed truths brings freedom, Korihor contends that freedom really means being without the constraints of righteousness”

Gerald N Lund: “If Mormon had included nothing but those [Korihor’s] teachings, they would have been of great value to us. But he did more than that. He also included Alma's answer to Korihor. . . .

“The first thing to note is that Alma does not get into a philosophical debate with Korihor. He does not talk about metaphysics or axiology or epistemology. He does not allow himself to get pulled onto the ground that Korihor tries to define as the area of debate. There is a great lesson in that. Alma teaches that we should combat false philosophies with revelation and doctrine, not with academic debate”
