Join us as we continue our study into 2 Nephi 26-27 and learn more about the events of the translation of the Book of Mormon, as prophesied by Nephi. We consider the evidence around the multiple 'voices' that rise from the dust, the interactions between Martin Harris and learned scholars and how well-known phrases from the Restoration apply to us also. 

Book of Mormon Central: The consultation with scholars also served to assure Martin Harris. Although the reactions of these learned men varied, Harris was satisfied enough with their replies to further assist with the translation and publication of the Book of Mormon. He served as scribe, financier, and witness of the Book of Mormon, all at great personal sacrifice. Besides shouldering the financial burden of printing the Book of Mormon, from which he never fully recovered, Martin’s once-sterling reputation suffered as a result of his undeviating faith in Joseph Smith after his trip to Mitchill and Anthon in New York City. His family and friends were “generally repulsed by his enthusiasm for a young man whose purported visions upset the greater Palmyra community. Friends advised him to cease espousing Joseph’s schemes. When Martin refused, they pronounced him deceived, if not deranged. . .. Yet he continued to side with Joseph Smith and risk further harm to his now spoiled reputation,” all the while knowing in his heart and in his mind the truthfulness of the work he was engaged in.

Today we continue our study of Chapters 26-27 in 2 Nephi. We focus on the prophecy of this book by Nephi. We reflect on the relationship between the prophecy of Nephi and the words of Isaiah and also consider the important role the Book of Mormon plays in these last days. 

Russell M Nelson: The Book of Mormon both illuminates the teachings of the Master and exposes the tactics of the adversary. The Book of Mormon teaches true doctrine to dispel false religious traditions—such as the erroneous practice of performing infant baptisms. The Book of Mormon gives purpose to life by urging us to ponder the potential of eternal life and 'never-ending happiness.' The Book of Mormon shatters the false beliefs that happiness can be found in wickedness and that individual goodness is all that is required to return to the presence of God. It abolishes forever the false concepts that revelation ended with the Bible and that the heavens are sealed today.

Join us today as we continue with 2 Nephi 26:20-33 and learn a number of important principles. Today we consider the universality of the doctrine of Christ, how it is available to all, when are are in contention when we seek to set ourselves up and how the Saviour does all He does for the world.

Dieter F Uchtdorf: Naturally, we all have a desire for recognition, and there is nothing wrong with relaxing and enjoying ourselves. But when seeking the “gain and praise of the world” is a central part of our motivation, we will miss the redemptive and joyful experiences that come when we give generously of ourselves to the work of the Lord.

Those who wholeheartedly turn their lives over to our Savior and serve God and fellowman discover a richness and fulness to life that the selfish or egotistic will never experience. The unselfish give of themselves. These may be small gifts of charity that have a grand impact for good: a smile, a handshake, a hug, time spent in listening, a soft word of encouragement, or a gesture of caring. All these acts of kindness can change hearts and lives. When we take advantage of the unlimited opportunities to love and serve our fellowmen, including our spouse and family, our capacity to love God and to serve others will greatly increase.

Today we begin our study of Nephi's interpretation of the words of Isaiah. We start with 2 Nephi 26 and consider what the state of the Gentiles will be in the latter-days and also reflect on the strategies of Satan.

Per G Malm: Along our way we are aided in our choices through the sustaining influence of the Spirit. Now, if we choose to act contrary to the light and understanding that we have, we will experience a bad conscience, which of course does not feel good. But a bad conscience is a blessing in that we immediately are reminded that it is time to repent. When we are humble and desire to do what is right, we will be anxious to act promptly to change our ways, while those who are proud and who may seek “to become a law unto [themselves]” (D&C 88:35) will allow Satan to lead “them by the neck with a flaxen cord, until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever” (2 Nephi 26:22) unless the spirit of repentance enters their hearts. To follow evil influences can never result in a feeling of peace simply because peace is a gift from God and it only comes through the Spirit of God. “Wickedness never was happiness” (Alma 41:10).

In our day-to-day actions, it is often the small and simple things that will have a long-lasting impact (see Alma 37:6–7). What we say, how we act, and how we choose to react will influence not only ourselves but also those around us. We can build up, or we can tear down.

Join us today as we study an excellent address given by the prophet at the time, Ezra Taft Benson about pride. He identifies how pride is the vice of mankind and we consider how we can strive to root this out from ourselves. 

Ezra Taft Benson: The Doctrine and Covenants tells us that the Book of Mormon is the “record of a fallen people.” (D&C 20:9.) Why did they fall? This is one of the major messages of the Book of Mormon. Mormon gives the answer in the closing chapters of the book in these words: “Behold, the pride of this nation, or the people of the Nephites, hath proven their destruction.” (Moro. 8:27.) And then, lest we miss that momentous Book of Mormon message from that fallen people, the Lord warns us in the Doctrine and Covenants, “Beware of pride, lest ye become as the Nephites of old.” (D&C 38:39.)

I earnestly seek an interest in your faith and prayers as I strive to bring forth light on this Book of Mormon message—the sin of pride. This message has been weighing heavily on my soul for some time. I know the Lord wants this message delivered now.

Today we (unfortunately) conclude our study of the Isaiah chapters within 2 Nephi, this time focusing on 2 Nephi 15:18-26. We consider the way these verses are being more and more fulfilled in our time and also discuss what the phrase 'hand is stretched out still' actually meant when Isaiah penned it. 

Book of Mormon Central: One important lesson to be drawn from this is to realize how easy it can be to misunderstand a particular phrase of scripture.9 As with Nephi’s people, modern readers often struggle to correctly read the ancient scriptures, not knowing enough “concerning the manner of prophesying among the Jews” (2 Nephi 25:1). 

While today it is easy to understand why people might commonly see the outstretched hand of God as a gesture of blessing, in the ancient world the hand of God was sometimes used in a negative sense, as it is in this case. This dramatically changes the way God is portrayed in these Isaiah passages. Rather than portraying God as angry yet still merciful, these verses focus on God in righteous indignation and divine wrath.

Join us today as we continue our study of the Isaiah chapters, focusing on 2 Nephi 12, 21 and 22. We focus on the Millennium and the prophecies about this time. We also consider our role in this great gathering. 

Ezra Taft Benson: They came west with the faith that God had “set his hand again the second time” 2 Ne. 21:11 to restore the house of Israel. They knew that they were a part of this great movement. They were converted to the truth that the Church of Jesus Christ had been restored again on the earth through the instrumentality of a latter-day Prophet, Joseph Smith, and that following his martyrdom, the keys of the priesthood had been continued through Joseph’s ordained successor, Brigham Young. They believed themselves to be God-directed and prophet-led. Their conviction inspired their sacrifices.

They came—with indomitable faith and courage, following incredible suffering and adversity. They came—with stamina, with inspired confidence for better days.

Today we continue into Isaiah 13 where we look at the consequences of the pride that was discussed yesterday. We consider how these can mirror into our lives and what we can see every day to identify where we're at in our personal pride cycle. 

Spencer V Jones: At times, consequences of sin may appear to be very subtle to the sinner. We may even convince ourselves . . . that no one will be able to detect our sins and that they are well concealed. But always to our Heavenly Father and often to spiritually sensitive leaders, parents, and friends, our sins are glaringly apparent. While attending a youth fireside with Elder Richard G. Scott, I noticed five youths scattered among the congregation whose countenances or body language almost screamed that something was spiritually amiss in their lives. After the meeting, when I mentioned the five youths to Elder Scott, he simply replied, ‘There were eight.

Henry B Eyring: This [verse] is describing a day when the Savior will come, a day we all look for… This scripture says that in that day, all of us who thought we were special and wonderful will seem smaller, and the Lord will be exalted. We will see better who He is, how much we love Him, and how humble we should be…We need Him, and the faith we have in Him makes us see Him as great and exalted and ourselves as small and dependent.

Today we begin our study of the Come Follow Me materials for this week with considering important ways we can understand the words of Isaiah more. We consider five keys that Nephi gives to help us and these have been shared on the Facebook Group. 

Bruce R McConkie: If we had sufficient insight, we would see in every gospel ordinance, in every rite that is part of revealed religion, in every performance commanded of God, in all things Deity gives his people, something that typifies the eternal ministry of the Eternal Christ . . . It is wholesome and proper to look for similitudes of Christ everywhere and to use them repeatedly in keeping him and his laws uppermost in our minds.
