Join us as we conclude this week's study of 1 Nephi 8-10, specifically looking at the valuable verse of 1 Nephi 10:19, where we learn the key for unlocking the mysteries of God. We also consider Nephi's perspective of these events and why he recorded what he recorded.
Dallin H Oaks: The Book of Mormon teaches that those who diligently seek shall have “the mysteries of God … unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost.” (1 Ne. 10:19; see also 1 Cor. 2:4–16; Alma 18:35; D&C 121:26.) The prophet Jacob declared the impossibility of uninspired man’s understanding God: “No man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God.” (Jacob 4:8.)
The Lord’s prescribed methods of acquiring sacred knowledge are very different from the methods used by those who acquire learning exclusively by study. For example, a frequent technique of scholarship is debate or adversarial discussion, a method with which I have had considerable personal experience. But the Lord has instructed us in ancient and modern scriptures that we should not contend over the points of his doctrine. (See 3 Ne. 11:28–30; D&C 10:63.) Those who teach the gospel are instructed not to preach with “wrath” or “strife” (D&C 60:14; see also 2 Tim. 2:23–25), but in “mildness and in meekness” (D&C 38:41), “reviling not against revilers” (D&C 19:30). Similarly, techniques devised for adversary debate or to search out differences and work out compromises are not effective in acquiring gospel knowledge. Gospel truths and testimony are received from the Holy Ghost through reverent personal study and quiet contemplation.

Today we learn together about Nephi and his response to what his father had taught his children. We consider the blessing it is to be able to receive personal revelation in our lives and how this can lead us step by step.
Ezra Taft Benson: Nephi had listened to his father, had believed his father, but he wanted to know through the same source his father knew—revelation. Worthy sons are entitled to receive from their Heavenly Father confirmation concerning the direction their mortal father gives them. It takes revelation to perceive revelation. So Nephi diligently sought the Lord and received a revelation which reaffirmed the revelation his father had given to the family.

Join us as we continue Lehi's teaching to his sons, this time regarding the coming of the Messiah, even Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. We consider this important clarification in his teaching as well as the promised blessings that the Saviour was to bring.
Ezra Taft Benson: The Book of Mormon Saints knew that the plan of redemption must start with the account of the fall of Adam . . . Just as a man does not really desire food until he is hungry, so he does not desire the salvation of Christ until he knows why he needs Christ. No one adequately and properly knows why he needs Christ until he understands and accepts the doctrine of the Fall and its effect upon all mankind. And no other book in the world explains this vital doctrine nearly as well as the Book of Mormon.

Today we pause with Nephi and consider the commandment he was given in 1 Nephi 9 to keep a second, smaller record containing the ministry of his people. We discuss the importance of record-keeping in general and the inspired reasons why we should also follow the promptings to record details for future generations.
Marvin J Ashton: Sometimes when we are asked to be obedient, we do not know why, except the Lord has commanded. From 1 Ne. 9:5 we read, 'Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not.' Nephi followed instructions even though he didn’t fully understand the wise purpose. His obedience resulted in blessings to mankind all over the world. By not obeying our present-day leaders, we plant our seeds in stony places and may forfeit the harvest.

Join us today as we continue the study of Lehi's Dream and try to complete the initial telling of this miraculous vision. We consider the different groups of people that are described and the relevance to symbols such as the great and spacious building in our lives.
Bonnie L Oscarson: I am often asked, “What is the greatest challenge our youth face today?” I answer that I believe it is the ever-present influence of the “great and spacious building” in their lives. If the Book of Mormon was written specifically for our day, then surely we cannot miss the relevance for all of us of the messages in Lehi’s vision of the tree of life and the effect of those pointing their fingers and taunting from the great and spacious building.
What is most heartrending to me is the description of those who have already fought their way through the mists of darkness on the strait and narrow path, have clung to the rod of iron, have reached their goal, and have begun tasting of the pure and delicious fruit of the tree of life. Then the scripture says that those finely dressed people in the great and spacious building “were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit.

Today we begin to dive into Lehi's Dream and consider the preparation he had before this revelatory experience. We discuss the meanings of the opening symbols and the lessons that we can learn for our lives today.
Marion D Hanks: I conceive this to be the simplest and most understandable of human emotions. That which is beautiful and good and satisfying to the soul is infinitely more so when shared with those we love. I believe this is the foundation of the missionary work of the Church, of the Primary program and the genealogical program and the serviceman's program, and every other effort made by the Church to lift and inspire and strengthen the individual child of God.

in a slightly different episode, we begin to consider the symbolism of Lehi's Dream which we'll be studying through the week. We use the incredibly useful Insight pages in the Ensign and signpost these as another excellent resource for your study of the Book of Mormon.

Join us as we conclude our jam-packed study of 1 Nephi 1-7, this time focusing on the relationship between having spiritual experiences through difficulty and the strength of our faith. We also consider the importance of gentle communication between family.
W Craig Zwick: There exists today a great need for men and women to cultivate respect for each other across wide distances of belief and behavior and across deep canyons of conflicting agendas. It is impossible to know all that informs our minds and hearts or even to fully understand the context for the trials and choices we each face.
Nevertheless, what would happen to the “corrupt communication” Paul spoke about if our own position included empathy for another’s experience first? Fully owning the limits of my own imperfections and rough edges, I plead with you to practice asking this question, with tender regard for another’s experience: “What are you thinking?”

Today we continue the study of 1 Nephi 3-4, looking closely at the successful attempt to retrieve the plates of brass. We consider how the Spirit was able to guide Nephi, the moral dilemma behind Nephi killing Laban and the power of a promise.
There's also an excellent Ensign article about the discussion of why Nephi killed Laban here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2020/01/the-power-of-deliverance-why-nephi-killed-laban
David A Bednar: The gradual increase of light radiating from the rising sun is like receiving a message from God “line upon line, precept upon precept” (2 Nephi 28:30). Most frequently, revelation comes in small increments over time and is granted according to our desire, worthiness, and preparation. Such communications from Heavenly Father gradually and gently “distil upon [our souls] as the dews from heaven” (D&C 121:45). This pattern of revelation tends to be more common than rare and is evident in the experiences of Nephi as he tried several different approaches before successfully obtaining the plates of brass from Laban (see 1 Nephi 3–4). Ultimately, he was led by the Spirit to Jerusalem, “not knowing beforehand the things which [he] should do” (1 Nephi 4:6). And he did not learn how to build a ship of curious workmanship all at one time; rather, Nephi was shown by the Lord “from time to time after what manner [he] should work the timbers of the ship” (1 Nephi 18:1).

Join us as we begin to study the story of the plates of brass. We focus today on 1 Nephi 3 and cover so many things! We reflect on how the Lord will provide a way for us to accomplish His will and how Nephi and his brothers interacted through this chapter.
Michelle Craig: They each received personalized direction, tailored to them, and each trusted and acted. The Lord is mindful of those who obey and, in the words of Nephi, will “prepare a way for [us to] accomplish the thing which he commandeth.” Note that Nephi says, “a way”—not “the way.”
Do we miss or dismiss personal errands from the Lord because He has prepared “a way” different from the one we expect?
