  • Episode 225 - CFM Jan 6 - Jan 12 Part III
LDS Study Session seeks to generate reflection and about areas in the Restored Gospel. Whether it's Come Follow Me, a General Conference talk or a recent Gospel Topic, hopefully you'll find something to keep the Spirit of Christ in your life. @mattsroberts90
Today we study 1 Nephi 2 and consider the key difference between Nephi and his older brothers. We reflect on the changing nature that we all have and how it's necessary to keep our humility and gratitude to help us progress.
Craig C Christensen: Like Alma, Nephi also came to know the truth for himself. After listening to his father speak of his many spiritual experiences, Nephi wanted to know what his father knew. This was more than simple curiosity—it was something he hungered and thirsted after. Even though he was “exceedingly young,” he had “great desires to know of the mysteries of God.” He yearned to “see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost.”

Today we pack a lot in one episode! We discuss some key points and information from the very first verses of 1 Nephi 1 and also discuss how there are testimonies of Christ within the first 15 verses (particularly 1 Nephi 1:7-15). Join us as we reflect on the lessons we gain from these 'most-read verses' of the Book of Mormon.
Dallin H Oaks: One of the things I learned in this most recent reading of the Book of Mormon was how much God loves all of His children in every nation. In the first chapter Father Lehi praises the Lord, whose “power, and goodness, and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth” (1 Ne. 1:14). Again and again the Book of Mormon teaches that the gospel of Jesus Christ is universal in its promise and effect, reaching out to all who ever live on the earth.

Join us as we begin our study of the first chapters of the Book of Mormon, 1 Nephi 1-7. We begin with considering the value of the scriptures and why they are necessary for God's children. We reflect on the blessings and benefit they give us as we sincerely study them.
Julie B Beck: The scriptures are so important that Nephi risked his life to obtain a copy of them. He wanted to “see, and hear, and know” (1 Ne. 10:17). He “searched [the scriptures] and found that they were desirable [and] of great worth” (1 Ne. 5:21). In the scriptures he learned about “the doings of the Lord in other lands, among people of old” (1 Ne. 19:22). He started a study of the scriptures and learned about Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost, and his identity as a son of God. He learned who he was and what to do

We take a little break from our regular Come Follow Me study to look at an article in the January 2020 Ensign focusing on the Bicentennial of the First Vision. We reflect on how the Lord prepared the Smith family and the Earth for the reception of the Restoration and how the Lord's work has been able to move forward.
President M Russell Ballard: The Lord prepared the world for the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ long before the Father and the Son appeared to Joseph Smith in 1820. In fact, the Lord’s preparation to restore the fulness of His gospel in the last days began before the earth was created.

Join us today as we continue to study into the Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith, focusing today on the translation process of the Book of Mormon. We discuss the use of the Urim and Thummim, as well as the seer stone that was used to translate the ancient record.

Gospel Topics Essay: Some people have balked at this claim of physical instruments used in the divine translation process, but such aids to facilitate the communication of God’s power and inspiration are consistent with accounts in scripture. In addition to the Urim and Thummim, the Bible mentions other physical instruments used to access God’s power: the rod of Aaron, a brass serpent, holy anointing oils, the Ark of the Covenant, and even dirt from the ground mixed with saliva to heal the eyes of a blind man.

Join us today as we delve into the Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith. We consider the miraculous coming forth of the Book of Mormon and what principles we can learn from the prophet's interactions with the angel Moroni.
Gordon B Hinckley: It was in this home that Moroni, the angel, appeared to the boy Joseph, calling him by name and telling him that God had a work for him to do and that his “name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people” (JS—H 1:33).
How could a farm boy, largely without formal education, have dared to say such a thing? And yet it has all come to pass and will continue to increase as this restored gospel is taught across the world.

Today we continue our Come Follow Me study by studying the account of the Three and Eight Witnesses. We consider their witness to the world and the evidence it brings. However we also reflect on the way that we can become a witness even though we have not physically seen the things they saw.
Henry B Eyring : Those you love can have more than the physical evidence given those witnesses by what they saw and heard. Those three witnesses had something more, something we all need. The Holy Ghost bore witness to their minds and hearts that what they saw and heard was true. The Spirit told them that the angel was from God and that the voice was that of the Lord Jesus Christ. That witness of the Spirit was given to them and many who were not there. It is a witness that can, if we qualify for the companionship of the Holy Ghost, be ours and stay with us forever.

Join us today as we continue our study of the beginning pages of the Book of Mormon. We take a different approach and study how this scripture refers to it in a number of ways. We also reflect on how this blesses our lives.
Russell M Nelson: The entire Creation was planned by God. A council in heaven was once convened in which we participated. There our Heavenly Father announced His divine plan. It is also called the plan of happiness, the plan of salvation, the plan of redemption, the plan of restoration, the plan of mercy, the plan of deliverance, and the everlasting gospel. The purpose of the plan is to provide opportunity for the spirit children of God to progress toward an eternal exaltation.

Happy New Year! We continue our study with the Introduction Page of the Book of Mormon. We consider this relatively recent addition to this book and consider why it was included, what messages we gather and how it promises blessings that can be put to the test.
Richard G Scott: Try reading the Book of Mormon because you want to, not because you have to. Discover for yourself that it is true. As you read each page ask, “Could any man have written this book or did it come as Joseph Smith testified?” Apply the teachings you learn. They will fortify you against the evil of Satan. Follow Moroni’s counsel. Sincerely ask God the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, with real intent, if the teachings of the Book of Mormon are true (see Moro. 10:3–5). Ask with a desire to receive a confirmation personally, nothing doubting. There has to be an explanation of that book you can hold in your hand. I know that you can receive a spiritual confirmation that it is true. You will then know that Jesus Christ lives, that Joseph Smith was and is a prophet, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord’s Church (see introduction to the Book of Mormon, especially the last paragraph). You will confirm that the Savior guides His Church through a living prophet. These truths will become a foundation for your productive life.

A new journey commences! I thought I would put a different picture with each episode to commemorate this.... let's see how far I get. So it begins! Join us at LDS Study Session with Come Follow Me as we begin our 2020 study of the Book of Mormon! We delve into the Title Page of this record, reflect on who wrote it and what valuable lessons we can learn from these first two paragraphs!
Joseph Smith: I wish to mention here, that the title-page of the Book of Mormon is a literal translation, taken from the very last leaf, on the left hand side of the collection or book of plates, which contained the record which has been translated, the language of the whole running the same as all Hebrew writing in general; and that said title-page is not by any means a modern composition, either of mine or of any other man who has lived or does live in this generation.
