The Diamond Crown line of cigars from JC Newman are some of the most luxurious cigars around. As my friends over at Famous-Smoke say it,

"these aromatic cigars are expertly handcrafted by Tabacalera A. Fuente and Newman families using only the rarest tobaccos and double-fermented Connecticut Shade-grown or Broadleaf Maduro wrappers."

It's hard to be into the world of cigars without hearing of at least one of these two brands, so a fantastic smoke should be in my future! The Diamond Crown Robusto No. 5 has a beautiful Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrapper that begs to be smoked. This vitola is shorter and thicker than a normal robusto, and I can't wait to dive in.

After snipping the end with my guillotine, the cold draw is perfect and has flavors of wheat and grass.

So, when a friend brought over a 7-10 year old Zino Platinum Scepter Grand Master Robusto to enjoy, I was pretty stoked. On the cold draw (which was absolutely perfect), I got notes of lemon and grass. For the first quarter of an inch, the burn was slightly ragged but evened out within the first 5 to 10 minutes.

The Zino Platinum Scepter Grand Master Robusto was a joy to smoke and made for a wonderful afternoon with friends. As you should expect from a cigar in this price point (I think ~$17 is about 40% off due to the Corona/COVID-19 depression), the burn was razor-sharp, the draw had just the right amount of resistance, and the flavors were delicious.

If you're looking for a true luxury smoke, one with not only perfect construction but also flavors that'll be a real delight, the Zino Platinum Scepter Grand Master Robusto fits the bill. And, for these reasons, this cigar earns a CigarScore 5.

The JC Newman Brick House Robusto is a tribute to the founder of JC Newman Cigars, Julius Caesar Newman. While the previous Brick House cigar wasn't my favorite, perhaps I got a bad stick, and this one will be better.

Final Thoughts:

The draw of the JC Newman Brick House Natural Robusto was perfect. The burn was almost perfect.

However, I didn't like the flavors of this cigar at all. There was a lot of flavor and spice in the second half, but they weren't nearly as good as they were in the first third of the smoke. The flavors were a little like sour citrus, and I did not enjoy them.

But, with all that said, the flavors of the Brick House Natural Robusto might be exactly what you're looking for. Even though I didn't, you might really enjoy how this stick was blended. And since the construction, draw, and burn of this cigar were all almost perfect, the JC Newman Brick House Natural Robusto earns a CigarScore 4.

This cigar is a Nicaraguan puro, meaning all of the tobacco inside is from Nicaragua. The Connecticut wrapper isn't as dark as I'd expected, and I especially wasn't expecting the bold flavors I tasted as soon as I lit the cigar.

On the cold draw, I tasted burning wood, maybe pine. The draw from the punch is just perfect, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the PSyKO Seven Nicaragua robusto has to offer.

In the middle third of the cigar, the burn was almost perfect, and the draw was fantastic. Regarding the flavors, the PSyKO Seven Nicaragua is about as classic as they come. On every puff, you'll know you're smoking a Nicaraguan cigar by the delicious combination of both spicey and creamy tasting notes.

Final Thoughts:

In the final third of the cigar, some of the delicious flavors from the first part of the cigar became harsh and perhaps a little bitter.

However, overall, the PSyKO Seven Nicaragua had a nearly perfect burn and perfect draw with a really tasty and delicious beginning and middle. Had that great experience that welcomed me into the cigar been the same experience that bid me farewell, this cigar would've earned a higher score. But, it didn't, so the PSyKO Seven Nicaragua earns a CigarScore 4.

After trying the Last Call Maduro, I knew I also wanted to try the AJ Fernandez Last Call Habano. This cigar just looks great!

The Last Call Habano comes from the AJ Fernandez factory in Nicaragua. It's short and stout, and it's a great looking cigar. Compared to the Maduro, the Habano has a medium-brown wrapper that appears to be very well made. The veins have been pressed, and the closed foot makes this cigar one I'm very excited about.

After punching the smoking end, the draw was just a tad tight. The flavors of the cold draw were very green and had tastes of wheat and grass.

Final Thoughts:

The flavors of ginger that I tasted in the cold draw were almost non-existent after lighting it up. However, that doesn't mean the C.L.E. Corojo Robusto was without flavor. It wasn't. In fact, this cigar has tons of flavor and lots of spicey notes throughout the entire smoke.

Regarding the burn, it was perfect. As was the draw. While I didn't just love the flavors of this cigar, it was extremely well constructed and there was basically nothing to complain about. And, while the blend didn't hit a home run for me, the flavors might be perfect for you. For these reasons, the C.L.E. Corojo Robusto earns a CigarScore 5.

Not every cigar shop has house blends, but some do. So when Bradley Reith over at Zeal Cigars in Phoenix, Arizona asked me to review some of his house blend cigars, I said, "I'm in!"

Today's smoke is a blend Bradley made himself. It's the Zeal Cigars Got Your Six Gordo, and it's a somewhat rustic-looking cigar with a barber pole wrapper made up of three different tobaccos. The initial flavors after cutting are very nice and the draw started off great.

Final Thoughts:

Where some house blend cigars leave a lot to be desired, often falling short in areas of flavor, construction quality, premium look and feel, the Zeal Cigars Got Your Six Gordo does not. This cigar stands apart from other non-name-brand sticks.

But, does the Got Your Six belong with the premium cigars on the shelf?

The first third of the smoke had flavors that were mild to medium, and the flavors from the Habano wrapper seemed to have been muted. That is until the final third which is when the cigar developed a little bit of a kick and the notes of vanilla transition to pepper. However, there were some slight construction issues with the Cameroon and Connecticut wrappers.

In the end, I would smoke this cigar again. Thought it had a couple of minor issues (which could also be because of temperature fluctuations in my humidor) the Got Your Six performed well, and it earns a CigarScore 3.

Sometimes a cigar sounds great, but you don't have a lot of time. That's the situation I found myself in the other day when I first found the AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro.

I didn't have my order of CigarScore hoodies in yet, so I didn't have warm clothes for smoking in. So, I found a lounge on CigarScore.com, drove there, and arrived with about 50 minutes left before they closed. When I was about to walk out of the humidor with a bunch of toros to smoke and thinking I might have to toss the final third of a bigger cigar when the shop closed, I saw the Last Call Maduro Geniales - a 4.5" cigar that might be perfect for the time I had.

After cutting the cigar, the cold draw was very nice. Its flavors were of pine and an oceany-seaweed; it was very odd. The closed foot is begging to be lit, so let's dive in.

Final Thoughts:

With just about an inch left on the AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro Geniales, the cigar wasn't hot, the draw was good, and the burn was consistent and even. However, I don't know if this stick was as good as the one I smoked at my local lounge, but this was still a pretty solid cigar.

Because this cigar has a great draw, great burn, and a great price point with pretty decent flavors, the AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro Geniales earns a CigarScore 4. Had the flavors been as good as the previous one I smoked, this stick would've likely earned a higher score. Smoke one and I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

This cigar is YUUUGE! Ok, it's not that big, but this Back2Back Connecticut is a 6 x 60 Toro Gordo of sorts, and it feels like a big, beefy cigar.

While punching the cigar, I accidentally knicked the side of the cigar with the bottom of my lighter (the punch is on the bottom). I feel stupid, and I hope it doesn't negatively impact the experience. On the cold draw, I taste citrus and honey.

In the middle of the Back2Back Connecticut Toro, I tasted roasted honey, hints of black licorice, and maybe even some Honey Nut Cheerios. In the final third, I had puffs that were a little sour and sometimes bitter.

Final Thoughts:

The Back2Back Connecticut Toro is a big cigar that has a lot to offer but also has some drawbacks due to its size. I think this particular vitola (i.e. size) is a little too big, and I think a different vitola with a different filler to binder to wrapper ratio might deliver the flavor combination I was hoping for.

While this cigar isn't my favorite, it's still pretty good. Though I might prefer this cigar from RoMa Craft or this one from Perdomo, I think the Back2Back Connecticut Toro is worth trying, just in a different size. Because I'd smoke this again, but would prefer a different size, the Back2Back Connecticut Toro vitola earns a CigarScore 3.

Cigar smokers are honest folk who like holding onto their hard-earned money, so when United Cigars wants to sell me a stick of tobacco for twenty-bucks, I think it should be good.

That said, the Byron Petit Poemas is a beautiful little cigar. The wrapper is a medium brown color marbled with flecks of darker brown, and it's quite pleasant to look at. Putting the torch to it, the cigar lit easily, though it did start off with a tight-ish draw.

Yes, the Byron Petit Poemas is a tiny cigar. Yes, the Byron Petit Poemas is expensive. And, yes, the Byron Petit Poemas only lasted just over an hour. But, is it worth the $20 price point?

The burn was pretty dang good. The flavors were very nice and the cigar smoked and felt very premium. However, the draw was tighter than I would have liked, despite having chopped the end off perfectly with my guillotine cutter.

In the end, the Byron Petit Poemas is a good cigar worth enjoying at least once. Because it's so expensive (yet quite luxurious), the Petit Poemas earns a CigarScore 4.
