On August 13, 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals’ training camp saw its first significant scuffle after 14 practices, sparked by an incident involving rookie first-round pick Shemar Stewart and franchise quarterback Joe Burrow. During an 11-on-11 drill, Stewart, rushing from the left side, stumbled after a shove from guard Lucas Patrick and accidentally collided with Burrow, knocking him to the ground. Burrow quickly recovered, but the incident prompted an immediate reaction from the offensive line, particularly Patrick, who engaged Stewart in a heated scuffle to defend the team’s star quarterback. Center Ted Karras later emphasized the need to protect Burrow, stating, “That’s our hopes and dreams right there,” while acknowledging the offensive line’s responsibility to block better.

The altercation, though intense, didn’t halt practice or result in injuries, a critical relief given Burrow’s injury history and importance to the team. Patrick and Stewart clashed multiple times, but both players and coaches downplayed the incident as a typical training camp flare-up, fueled by heat and frustration after a tough day for the offense. The defensive front, including Stewart and TJ Slaton, dominated, with Slaton noting they could have recorded multiple sacks in a live game.
Karras and Patrick praised Stewart’s elite speed and potential, with Patrick noting, “There’s very few people on this planet who can cover ground like him.” Stewart, who declined to comment post-practice, later approached Burrow for a fist bump, signaling no lingering animosity. The incident underscored the team’s protective stance toward Burrow and highlighted areas for improvement, particularly for the offensive line, as they prepare for their preseason game against the Washington Commanders on August 18.
