Cincinnati Soccer Talk

The road to the MLS Cup has been surprisingly navigable. However, it's time to swerve right and exit the MLS highway for a pit stop in the Leagues Cup.

Last season, FC Cincinnati got further into the knockout round than the season before. As much as that momentum is positive, this reiteration of the Leagues Cup has a completely different format. To get tho the smaller knockout rounds, the Orange & Blue have to go through three Liga MX squads and hope they can do so without many hiccups.

So what can we expect from C.F. Monterrey, FC Juarez, and Chivas Guadalajara? We invite Jaime from Cantina MX to give us the lowdown on Chivas and Eddie from Rayados90 to reintroduce us to the Vazquez-less version of Monterrey. Juarez? Well, we can at least try to narrow down what MLS team they would be.

Can this new format please everyone? Are Columbus or Inter Miami able to dominate the competition again? Does Geoff sincerely think Cruz Azul could win it all??

For the second time in just 11 days, FC Cincinnati squared off against thier foes from Miami, but this time was different. Miami was forced to play without Messi and Alba after the players chose not to participate in the ALL-Star game. Despite their absences, Cincinnati still only came away with a point on the road.

In episode 430 of Cincinnati Soccer Talk we cover the Miami match, Messi's ineligibility, and the upcoming League's Cup match with Monterrey.

On paper, FC Cincinnati fans may have approached this next game with some confidence. After all, keeping Lionel Messi off the scoring sheet is no small feat. Despite losing Kevin Denkey for a prolonged spell, the Orange & Blue rode Evander's brace to silence the Herons 3-0 at TQL Stadium.

However, the confidence this weekend could be harder to measure. The news could focus on Evander and Messi again testing each other's MVP chances. However, Messi's absence from the All-Star Game on Wednesday has ruffled feathers in the Winged Lions' fans. That should lead to a suspension if history dictates anything, but can we honestly expect the G.O.A.T. to miss another match against Cincinnati?

That possibility still exists, so we ask Alex from Bleacher Report and The Heron's Nest about such a threat. Did Pat Noonan play his cards correctly last time? Can the Orange & Blue pull another fast one against South Beach's Super Squad? What could Javier Mascherano drum up to resume Miami's defense of the Supporters' Shield?

(Bonus episode! Relive the live RSL episode of Jersey Swap in audio form.)

With their biggest win in the past, FC Cincinnati focus again on the present with a suddenly-mammoth three-point challenge at Real Salt Lake Saturday. The hunter now becomes the hunted, as RSL have gone five matches unbeaten.

Another change of pace—Mr. "No Days Off" took PTO this week, so Jason Ashcraft steps in for a special Jersey Swap with Scott Omer from Designated Pundits. While the primary focus will be on Diego Luna after his USMNT breakout, can the Orange & Blue return to their away form without any letdowns?

FC Cincinnati continues to battle their way through the toughest stretch of matches of the season and have only dropped one match of their last seven. This week they served up a couple of losses to Miami at home and Real Sal Lake on the road.

Despite taking all six points last week and moving back to the top of the table in the supporter's shield race, they have to face Miami again this weekend for the second time in 3 matches.

The hype train finally pulls into Union Terminal this week. David Beckham brings his band to TQL Stadium for a midweek performance between FC Cincinnati and Inter Miami. However, as much as The Herons have dominated headlines and jersey sales, the Orange & Blue still stand (slightly) ahead of Miami, and a win over the hottest team in MLS can stave off the oncoming wave.

As much as we'll try to not mention LM 10 (and make a drinking game about it), this week we invite Daniel from Arriba Bolso to talk about the Argentinian G.O.A.T. Can the team fully function if Messi (DRINK!) manages to have a bad game? Does Javier Mascherano have the defense to keep Cincinnati away from the scoreboard? How does Rodrigo de Paul fit into this system, both physically and financially?

It comes home only once a year—twice if we're lucky—and each time, the "Hell Is Real" derby fails to disappoint.

Ohio's biggest soccer rivalry returns to the confines of TQL Stadium Saturday evening. When FC Cincinnati and Columbus Crew clash for possession of the soul of Ohio, pride is on the line. However, the perspective of the radio booth may paint a different picture—how does the voice of The Crew see this rivalry?

We spend some time with Chris Doran, the play-by-play broadcaster for Columbus Crew on 105.7 FM, to talk about the evolution of the Crew and "Hell Is Real". What was once a team that shied away from investment in Columbus soccer has become a squad that prioritizes success in the face of their younger brother. How does Chris see Saturday's crucial matchup pan out, and what do the Crew need to do to escape the Queen City with three points?

FC Cincinnati came out fast and confident against the Fire and put themselves ahead with a comfortable 2 goal lead. But that didn't stop the Fire from pushing back and all but stealing a point at TQL. Join us for episode 427 of Cincinnati soccer talk as we break down the game and look ahead at Hell is Real.

You're going to need FIRE for an explosive Fourth of July holiday, and we could be seeing that with the Chicago Fire coming to TQL Stadium. Last time against Chicago, FC Cincinnati escaped with another one-goal win on the road, but needed three goals to pull it off. Since then, Chicago has been the most potent offense in the East, but have only a +4 goal differential to show for it.

What should we be aware of the second time with a half-season processed under head coach Gregg Berhalter? How has the likes of Philip Zinckernagel snuck his way onto the All-Star Game roster? We ask the host of the "Danny T Radio" YouTube channel if the Fire are a legitimate threat to the Eastern Conference this season. (While we're at it, let's look at our soccer kit collections.)
