Cinema Gold Show

Cookie cutter Christmas movies about young love and presents are nice, but let’s be honest: they all start to look the same after a while. And if there’s one El Camino Christmas doesn’t lack, it’s originality.

Just look at the film’s imagery: Gone are the glistening white-topped pines of Christmas movies past, replaced here by sun-dried cacti and crispy brown trees just waiting to spark a forest fire. Heck, if not for a festive greeting spray painted on the window of the liquor store, you might even forget that it’s Christmastime in El Camino. (At one point, Shepard’s character literally exclaims, “Oh, shit. It is Christmas!”)

Welcome to a new episode of the Cinema Gold Show. This week we continue our new series Big Bang: A First Timer's Watch and Review of The Big Bang Theory. This week we move on to season 5. Up to now, creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady have been smart enough to figure out that they don't need to manufacture a bunch of conflict in any given episode -- it's enough to introduce a simple setup, then allow each character to address the situation in their own way.

This is truly a first-timer's watch and thoughts of The Big Bang Theory.

Some movies get made because the filmmakers have a story they desperately have to tell, a tale that could change the world forever, and speak volumes about the human condition. Then again, some movies get made because Kurt Russell looks awesome in a beard and would make a really cool Santa Claus. This week is the start of our Netflix Roulette Holiday Edition.

The stoner comedy has a long, if not pedigreed, history. The unsuspecting super-agent espionage film has been done before as well. So, in this day of mash-ups and remixing, why not put the two genres together? American Ultra may be the answer to that question.

Welcome to a new episode of the Cinema Gold Show. This week we continue our new series Big Bang: A First Timer's Watch and Review of The Big Bang Theory. This week we move onto season 3. Up to now, creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady have been smart enough to figure out that they don't need to manufacture a bunch of conflict in any given episode -- it's enough to introduce a simple setup, then allow each character to address the situation in their own way. Hence we were entertained by Howard and Raj arguing over a species of cricket ("The Jiminy Conjecture"), Sheldon tending awkwardly to Penny after she dislocated her shoulder ("The Adhesive Duck Deficiency"), and Leonard learning the rules of football from Sheldon ("The Cornhusker Vortex").

This is truly a first-timer's watch and thoughts of The Big Bang Theory.
