Cinema Gold Show

This week on the Box Office Report, we dive into the latest results from the past weekend. Sadly, this week pretty much the box office was stagnant. Everybody pretty much stayed in the same spots as last week. However, Spider-Man No Way Home made some pocket change.

This week on Classic Rewind, we wrap up our month of reviewing Heist/Crime films with the unusual but funny Logan Lucky.

How seriously can one take a movie that features characters with names like Joe Bang and Max Chilblain? That the former is a rural West Virginia demolition expert played by a bleach-blond, flamboyantly accented Daniel Craig, and the latter an obnoxious English energy drink magnate portrayed by Seth MacFarlane (in what appears to be a combination John Oates/Michael Jackson costume), does not exactly impart a sense of gravitas on to Logan Lucky, the laidback caper comedy that marked Steven Soderbergh’s return to movies after a self-imposed “retirement.” And that’s without even mentioning the hapless Logan boys: the hangdog amputee Clyde (Adam Driver) and the limping Jimmy (Channing Tatum), who hatches a plan to rob a pneumatic tube system under the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, after losing his job “for liability reasons involving insurance.”

As a child, Tarantino was a fan of the early eras of Marvel Comics, particularly those that were plotted and drawn by Jack Kirby with dialogue by Stan Lee, and is a confessed fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a December 2009 interview with John Scott Lewinski of Digital Spy, Tarantino said that he plans to retire from filmmaking when he is 60, in order to focus on writing novels and film literature. He is skeptical of the film industry going digital, saying, "If it actually gets to the place where you can't show 35 mm film in theaters anymore and everything is digital projection, I won't even make it to 60." He has also stated that he has a plan, although "not etched in stone", to retire after making his tenth movie: "If I get to the 10th, do a good job and don't screw it up, well that sounds like a good way to end the old career."

Today we are talking all about Quentin Tarantino, one of America's most influential directors.

The Percy Jackson series is officially a go at Disney+. While there have been rumblings of the series making headlines for months, Disney+ has just officially revealed in a new video that they've given a series order to Percy Jackson and the Olympians with plans to start production this summer. Casting is now underway, so while no actors are currently attached, we may be hearing some announcements in the near future as the project comes together with its official greenlight.

We also look at the sudden decision by Peacock to end The Lost Symbol show after only one season. On a lighter note, Greg Daniels is returning to King of the Hill and looking at a reboot.

The Batman 4 Hour Cut Screened was screened for studio executives ahead of its March release. Unfortunately, moviegoers will only see a 3 hour cut of the film. We also take a look at the latest box office numbers for this past weekend and see that Spider-Man has swung back on top of the box office, kicking Scream from its perch. After watching the reboot/sequel Scream, we are ready to give you our take on the funny scary horror film.

Tonight we dive into the film Taking of Pelham 123, starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. It’s a simple premise really, but director Tony Scott managed to inject enough tension and sharp dialogue to keep audience engaged. This is a story of an ordinary man forced into extraordinary circumstances, played brilliantly by Denzel Washington.

John Travolta’s role offers a strong contrast as the ultimate baddie. A self-described wronged man, Ryder is hell-bent on revenge against the NYC government, Travolta channeled his role as Castor Troy in Face/Off with his sinister laughs and facial ticks. Just like Troy, he’s not an entirely unsympathetic villain—one can’t help feeling sorry for him as much as we despise what he does.

Action Movies get plenty of things wrong, though most of us don't really think about the inaccuracies because they're movies. It becomes a problem when the myths perpetuated by these films cause problems in real life. Like, say during times of emergencies. These are six unrealistic things that happen in action movies.
