Every year, the Joes place a bet on how many Oscar predictions they get right, and the winner gets to force the losers to watch a movie of their choice. This year, Noah's Best Editing pick put him over the top, and he finally got a chance to make Justin & Alex watch his all time favorite film, Milos Forman's 1984 Best Picture winning film Amadeus, starring F. Murray Abraham

We (almost) all saw a movie in an actual theater this week! After a year and a half, we went back to the movies for Lin-Manuel Miranda & Jon M. Chu's musical In The Heights with friend of the show Manish Mathur. We discuss how well Chu and company adapt the stage musical for the silver screen; whether the romances at the heart of the film land; who our favorite members of the ensemble were; and what to make of the colorism controversy surrounding the film following its release last month.
Please follow our guest Manish on his podcasts It Pod to Be You and Queer & Now and his written work at Talk Film Society.

We were promised two MCU movies this summer! Obviously, real life got in the way, but that doesn't mean the Joes have to settle for only one MCU-related episode for Summer 2021. Instead, they welcomed The Pop Break's Managing Editor and Socially Distanced co-host Al Mannarino onto the pod to run through their favorite underrated Marvel movies, if such a thing could even exist.

Tonight is Oscar’s big night, and to celebrate The Joes are discussing the surprising Oscars’ juggernaut Nomadland, directed by Chloe Zhou and starring Frances McDormand as Fern, a woman who takes to the American countryside in her van as she deals with the loss of her community and the death of her husband. The film is nominated for SIX Oscars, including Best Picture. The Joes break down everything they loved about the film, while also touching on the Amazon controversy that has come up a time or two during this endlessly extended Oscars Season.

Franchise installments and Oscar hopefuls were nowhere to be found for most of 2020, and that left a ton of time to catch up on all those films we'd been putting off. In the second half of our 2020 retrospective, we skim the cream of the crop from our non-2020 film diaries to breakdown everything we caught up with. From our favorite classics, modern classics, and rewatches, to which actors and filmmakers from yesteryear we fell in love with while we were living in our quarantine bubbles, we share the many silver linings we encountered along the way that helped make 2020 just a tad more bearable.

Happy Valentine's Day! As a special Valentine's Day gift, we are closing out our Fall of Favorites series with one of cinema's greatest couples, Jesse and Celine, in the timeless classic about existential dread creeping in at the moment your life no longer feels like your own Before Sunset. This 2004 Richard Linklater masterpiece, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Deply, is a the middle film in Linklater's Before Trilogy, and it checks in on Jesse and Celine, now in their early 30s, to see how the last seven years have treated them since the events of Before Sunrise. Returning guest Marisa Carpico helps Justin & Alex breakdown this classic walk and talk romance filled with identity crises, carefully observed interpersonal and gender dynamics, decades spanning romance, fantasy and incredible imagery of Paris during the magic hour.
