[su_dropcap size=”5″]M[/su_dropcap]usic is such an integral part of the movies that it actually predates audible dialogue by several decades.   Even films like The Last Picture Show, which lacks a traditional score, rely on incidental music to help set the atmosphere.  On this week’s Cinemavino, we talk about songs that reshape the way we view a movie, and the movies that reshape the way we listen to certain songs.
Along this aural voyage, we sample some delicious vino from Teutonic Wine Company, out of Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley.  Teutonic features wines named from musical inspiration:  Their Jazz Odyssey is taken from the funniest music-based movie ever made, This is Spinal Tap.  (I’ll add a correction to the broadcast.  This rich, melon-heavy white was so damn delicious, we railed the entire bottle before recording.  You can hear the booze hit around the 30:00 mark.  At several points, I incorrectly refer to the Jazz Odyssey by another Teutonic offering, the Foiled Cucumber.  The Cucumber is also named after a memorable Spinal Tap scene, and I think this leads to my hazy confusion.  When you hear us talking about the Cucumber, just think about the Odyssey.)

So kick back, pour yourself something tasty, and enjoy some Cinemavino!

  • 18. Vivian vs. Vivian
[su_dropcap]T[/su_dropcap]he notion of different actors passing along a character like a relay baton dates at least as far back as the Greek amphitheaters.  (I really, really really wanna start a review with, “Since the dawn of man…”  I haven’t kicked off an essay that awkwardly since middle school, and I want…no–I need to.) Hamlet, Scrooge, Sherlock Holmes, Becky from Roseanne, all these iconic characters have been subject to multiple interpretations and debate over who played them best rages like a frothy river.
For this episode, we discuss different takes on the same role.  And why some roles (Indiana Jones is a prime example) aren’t getting recast.  We pair this discussion with Pinot Noirs from two different regions:  The A to Z winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and a California offering that we didn’t care for and will decline to identify.

Now, pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy a little Cinemavino!

We’re drinking Martinis, delicious Pinot Noir, fancy bubbly and talking all things James Bond.  I’m a huge 007 fan, and our discussion inspired me to write an entire article to accompany this episode.

  • 16. Let's Get Dabney Coleman an Oscar
No,  seriously.  Dabney Coleman needs an Academy Award.  Where would our movie-going lives be without him?  Coleman was the go-to guy when an 80s movie needed an asshole authority figure.  When it came to playing an oily dude in a cheap suit, pulling drags off a cigarette and firing sexist one-liners, nobody did it better.  (“What’s idiotic about power making a woman masculine?!?”)  Lots of character actors shy away from playing a heel all the time, but there was Dabney:  Always a badass at bein’ bad.  So, let’s get the man some statues.  Hell, let’s steal a couple from John Williams.  None will be the wiser.
Anyway, now that my vent session is complete.  On with the countdown:  This week, the boys and I talk about the most famous movies we’ve never seen.  Everybody’s got at least one, I don’t care who ya are.  There’s a movie that everybody quotes, that’s won tons of awards, and you’ve never seen it.  But, you smile and nod like you have.  We talk about those movies, and we drink some delicious grower Champagne.
Also, you may hear us burst out with song snippets, and cut ourselves off at 8 seconds.  That stems from a (probably apocryphal) belief that if you can keep your reference within that time period, you’re not infringing anything.  I read that on the internet, so it must be true.  So kick back, and drink in a little Cinemavino.
