How leaders view the communication function depends entirely on whether communication produces results that matter to them. Delivering that value doesn’t just happen. In the first Circle of Fellows broadcast of 2022, four IABC Fellows explored the various dimensions of communicating for results that matter, from knowing what’s keeping leaders awake at night, the elements of the business and strategic plans, establishing the means of assessing the results of the communication, and how to share those results with leaders.
About the panel
Priya Bates is a senior communication executive who provides strategic internal communication counsel in order to ensure leaders, managers, and employees understand the strategy, believe in the vision, act in accordance with the values, and contribute to business results. She is president of Inner Strength Communications in Toronto and previously served as senior director of Internal Communications at Loblaw Companies.
Stephanie Maria Griffiths is the senior partner of Cohesion, Communication Research and Development, Johannesburg South Africa, which she founded in 1990. Cohesion is a full-service communication, behavioral research, and development consultancy which is privileged to include both local and multinational organizations within the public and private sectors among its client base. Stephanie is an Accredited Business Communicator (ABC)and served as the first non-North American chairperson of IABC’s International Executive Board. (2003-2004). In addition to her volunteer role with IABC Stephanie has served as the Vice-Chairperson of the South African National Qualification Forum Standards’ Generating Body for Public Relations and Communication Management and on a curriculum advisory committee for the faculty of Communication Management for a leading South African university. Organizational, communication and behavioral research remain Stephanie’s abiding passion and some awards for client projects she has assisted on (awarded to client) include the IABC Jake Wittmer Research Award for stakeholder perceptions research undertaken on behalf of and in consultation with the University of the Free State (UFS) as well as International Business (Stevie) Awards for stakeholder perceptions research and stakeholder engagement planning for the SABC Pension Fund. She has published articles on attitudinal shaping through focussed and ethical group Intervention, leadership development in a dynamic socio-political environment, communication skilling and its impacts on organisational behavioural patterns and meeting worker expectations in times of change. Prior to founding her practice, Stephanie worked on a large South African newspaper, and as the editor of a consumer publication as well as of a national financial journal before moving to a South African based multinational as a Communication and OD Specialist.
Cindy Schmieg is an award-winning strategic communicator. With 30+ years of corporate, agency, and consulting experience, Cindy now teaches online within the Communications Master Degree program at Southern New Hampshire. She has served in many IABC leadership roles and today serves as IABC 2018 Gold Quill Awards Chair.
Jim Shaffer is an internationally recognized business adviser, leadership coach, author, speaker and leader of the Jim Shaffer Group, a team of seasoned advisers devoted to improving strategy execution through strong leaders and engaged people.
