About Talk: It is not the state, the oppressor, of the chief social agents that offer us or author this path toward liberation and reconciliation. But God alone, who become like us, incarnate, in order to reconcile all things unto himself. Our community is an expression of that reconciliation and that liberation. People might find unity and freedom right in our cells, right in our meetings. They might be freed from what oppresses them and invited them to love their enemy, thereby liberating their enemy from his or her own captivity.

About Talk: Francis of Assisi was glad to go from the worldly “top” to the bottom when he embraced the life of faith as a young man. As the son of a wealthy Italian merchant in the 12th century, he had the best of everything and lived the high life, but when he landed in prison en route to battle he started asking deeper questions. He saw Jesus in the poor and broken and loved him. He felt like God was asking him to rebuild the chapel on the outskirts of town, and it was symbolic of a deeper call to rebuild the church from the inside out, from the heart, from a moment by moment relationship with the living God. He started making disciples of Jesus who were attracted to his irrepressible joy. He and his brothers lived off the land and relied on God to provide as they went around preaching and taking care of people.
