About Talk: Courage is more than doing some heroic act. Ordinary courage is about moving with what moves you; acting on what you know. Jesus gets into a practice of courage by giving us a big task that requires it, but also sets up the context in which it will thrive: the church. The Great Commission in Matthew 28 helps us find our courage and it feels good to act upon it. Jesus reassures us with his presence as we figure it out. That might be enough for some, but Ben explores more of the intricacies and practicalities too.

About Talk: It’s very easy to get stopped, shut down, quenched. Cynicism, sarcasm, apathy, oppression, out own wounding—all of it acts together to hold us back from doing what we know; acting on what we know we can’t not do. That movement is experienced differently by each person, but we are all moved. Everyone, Christian and otherwise, has a sense of purpose welling up in them. Jesus activates that and gives us a context in which to express it. When we feel like backing off, when our nerve is about to fail, Jesus says, "Lo I am with you," and he’s all we got a lot of the time.

About Talk: It’s just a fact of our limited experience as human beings that we don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Embracing that limitation and depending on God is a way to experience the enoughness Jesus has for us. When Peter put Jesus up to paying for something Jesus didn’t need to pay, Jesus told Peter to go catch a fish and in its mouth he would find a gold coin. Let’s not get over how ridiculous this is. Let’s let the wonder of that moment spill into all of our surprises. We do not know what God will do. And that is good news because we are often certain that God will do nothing or we have to do everything. God will do something and want to be ready to receive it.

Jesus gives us eternity now to counter that sense of rush. We have forever to get where we are going. That openness is key to enjoying the passage of time and actually moving toward transformative growth. Jesus promises freedom, even beyond death. If we start there, we will really get somewhere…in time
