Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • Siena jazz cani
Piazza del Campo, Siena reimagined by Andy Billington.

"I worked into the original recording of Siena Piazza del Campo a number of forgotten "sonic sketch book ideas" found on an old computer hard drive. Abandoned song ideas, Zoom recorder piano motifs from lockdown 2020 and some fragmented reverse piano tape experiments were re appropriated. These slowly formed the basis for the track.

"Some form of rotary synth effect from Apple Logic Pro 8 (2008) added to the movement of the track as did a fragment stock loop sample of a jazz trio. Adding reverse reverb to one section of the jazz drums gave the final rhythmic chaos finish.

"Finally the all important dog yelp samples were repositioned (a part of the original recording that really stood out). In a town famous for horse racing it is somewhat ironic that the dogs finally get a look in..."

  • Leaving Sicily
Palermo airport reimagined by Mat Ward.

"Leaving Sicily is a poetic remembrance, expressed through sound, of my travels across the Island in 2017. For me the island was a constant  barrage of wonder; both beautiful and terrifying, welcoming and isolating, modern and ancient and familiar yet alien.

"The piece heavily manipulates samples from the field recording captured at The Falcone Borsellino airport to express some of the dichotomies above. Leaving Sicily finishes with the ‘raw’ sound of the crowd of the airport terminal representing the transition from my surreal and personal travel back into the world of normality - just another tourist in the crowd about to return to his normal life."

Checking in at Falcone Borsellino airport, Palermo, recorded by Giuseppe Calisti.

"While I was waiting to check-in I found myself in front of a long line of passengers and I took the opportunity to record the audio and the din of that moment."
