  • Falcone Borsellino airport
Checking in at Falcone Borsellino airport, Palermo, recorded by Giuseppe Calisti.

"While I was waiting to check-in I found myself in front of a long line of passengers and I took the opportunity to record the audio and the din of that moment."

  • Io non
Giardino di Villa Strozzi, Florence, reimagined by Sarah Knudtson.

"The sounds of the Giardino di Villa Strozzi reminded me of dusk and I imagined a magical stroll along its wooded paths. As I began to play with remixing the recording I suddenly remembered a series of anti-records I had created from discs I had inherited from my grandmother. Looking  through the abandoned project, I found an Italian record called, La Voce di Wilma Doich and began to make recordings by dropping the needle on the scratched and shattered surface as it spun on the turntable. The title was taken from the song, Io Non Ci Saro, which references my absence from the garden and the absence of my grandmother."

  • Hymn to the personal cathedral
Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Volterra reimagined by Artur Kinal.

"As may be seen from the title I was inspired by Guy Debord quote: "each person will live in his own personal 'cathedral'". So I reimagined this actual cathedral singing to make it more personal and fitting to my imagination of my own cathedral and how it would sound.

"In the process I used AE Modulkar only, deforming the sampled piece to the point where it was more to my liking and adding some other sounds to accompany it. This was my way to create and enhance the recording's solemn and uplifting mood."

  • Sleep City
Piazza Dalmazia in Florence reimagined by Ross Burns.

"The inspiration: You are falling asleep in the afternoon and are somewhere warm. As you drift off, lightly in the background you begin to hear only the sounds around you. This field recording reminded me of these moments.

"The track is made by panning different parts of the field recording to the left and right. I then added processing and texture in the low-end to fill the space. The chord sound and pad sound are made from fragments of the field recording stretched, placed into a sampler and processed differently. The top end of a piano is layered on the keys sound. With regards to the chords it’s one take, I tried to play the chords taking into consideration the movements created by the field recording."

  • KafkaKlaxon
Kotor clock tower reimagined by Camilla Fanning.

"The Montenegro bell recording is perfectly pleasant, unfortunately the year that's in it all I could think of was a warning bell. The piece reflects a sense of swirling words, numbers, unease and alarm.

"The tracks are taken from real emails and texts received over the last year, as well as some official advice. In all it felt like a general blur of related, ominous yet somehow inadequate communication. Responding to and trying to keep a record of this moment in time seemed the right approach. Frankly, it was impossible to avoid."
