Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • Gull argument at Stair Hole
At the Durdle Door area of outstanding beauty in Dorset, England, the Stair Hole cove is a secluded, reverb-drenched cove tucked away behind the cliffs. The gentle swish of waves blends with the sounds of holidaymakers escaping the 2020 Covid-19 lockdowns, and above that the sounds of gulls wheeling and arguing among themselves is the key feature in the soundscape. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • World Economic Forum funicular conversations
On board the funicular that descends from SchatzAlp into the town of Davos, we're visiting the 2020 World Economic Forum, and keenly listening in to the types of conversations that take place when the world's business leaders (and corporate marketeers) descend on one small town in Switzerland. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • Undercurrents
Lulworth Cove reimagined by Richard Gadd.

"A collective noun for gulls is a squabble which is also descriptive of the noises they make. On the other hand they can soar gracefully arcing in the sky.

"I was struck by the existence of two worlds in the recording, one of the holiday makers and the other more mysterious and enduring of the gulls and the cove itself and the piece is a description of that."

  • I went to the woods
Stream at Malham Cove, Yorkshire, England reimagined by Canis Arboris.

"It's a soundtrack for journey into the woods. The deeper we get, the more we can separate from everyday world of small, unimportant things, which in turn allows us to dive deep into the space of our own mind.

"I approached the piece by playing with two simple chords on electric guitar, then added another layer of guitar on top of that, then bass and synths. Finally, I tweaked and automated some parameters while mixing."

  • Beneath the cliffs at Malham Cove
Malham Cove is a huge curving amphitheatre-shaped cliff formation of limestone rock about 260 feet high, and is one of the major tourist destinations and beauty spots in the Yorkshire Dales national park in England. At the bottom of the cliffs, the soundscape is calm and the air empty, carrying any sound large distances, and a small trickling stream is the main sonic feature on this quiet day, with pockets of birdsong and the odd passing rambler.

    Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • Soundwalk through the Krc forest
Field recording from the Krč forest, Czech Republic by Kvetoslav Slambor.

"A sunny weekend day in the forest located in between the city outskirts and the suburbs. Lot of people come to enjoy the day in the nature, bike through or have a drink at the beer garden on the edge of the forest."

  • Skrytý
Soundwalk through the Krč forest, Czech Republic, reimagined by Richard Watts.

"The original recording is lovely and I didn't want to muck about with it too much so I've created a soundtrack under the original recording. It's supposed to be slightly sinister and take you on a journey."

  • Underground transmission from Brood X
Brood X cicadas reimagined by Cities and Memory.

"The drone of the Brood X cicadas, coupled with the amazing story of how they all appear en masse without warning, brings to mind the idea of the brood as a mysterious alien force emerging from beneath the Earth itself.

"This piece imagines a broadcast transmission from Brood X to the human race, crackling out across the shortwave radio frequencies before picking up into a definitive message to humanity in the propulsive second half.

"From a production point of view, every sound here is derived from the original recording, and it was a great excuse to break out the box of tricks marked 'tape effects, broken speakers and crackling radio waves'"
