Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • In the Hauptbahnhof, Dusseldorf
"In November 2019, my daughter and I went to Düsseldorf, Brussels and Ghent for a short vacation around a business trip. This is a recording from one of the tracks at the Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof on November 19."

    Recorded by Adam Aronson.

  • Atlam Tropria
Sounds from inside Malta International Airport reimagined by Karhide.

"The track came together as an experiment in Ableton Live, creating two different drones from the original sound and then creating a beat and bass line that changes throughout the track.

"The original sound was then mixed back in with a convolution reverb applied. The track was then mastered in Ozone by iZotope."

  • Arriving at Malta International Airport
Recording from inside Malta International Airport, taking us past baggage claim, where we can hear a luggage belt moving, a small crowd talking, phones ringing and the classic sounds of people in transit arriving into an airport. Recorded by Marcel Gnauk.

  • The sound of a traditional Yorkshire dry stone wall
Dry stone walls are an iconic sight throughout Yorkshire in England, each one painstakingly constructed from layer upon layer of stone, without any form of cement to hold them together.

There are estimated to be over 5,000 miles in the Yorkshire Dales alone, some dating back over 600 years to when they were built to repel wolves.

In this recording, you can hear the fascinating sound of a trickling stream just below the wall resonating up through the stones to create a rich, reverb-inflected water sound that you can only hear by placing your ear next to the wall - or a recording device into the wall.

    Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • Palimpsest
Yorkshire water trickling in a dry wall recording reimagined by Anna Recasens.

"I am writing with sound. I like the idea of reusing, recycling, repurposing a sound, superimposing one on another. The original remains deliberately in the background.

"This version is an attempt to create a landscape that relies upon sound, exposing the very principles and ways of life in a location, and there is resistance, a response, that surfaces through the palimpsest, involving the listener in glimpses of a disappearing past, and in an emergent fluent new landscape."

  • Rescue helicopter at the door
Dorset rescue helicopter reimagined by Simon Woods.

"The piece is partially built up from the sound of the sound of the helicopter blades to make a basic rhythm. This is complemented by waves of synths."

  • Search and rescue helicopter coming in to land
On a visit to the iconic Jurassic Coast tourist attraction of Durdle Door, the beach was suddenly cleared of people by site security, as a search and rescue helicopter was called to take off someone in distress to hospital.

This recording captures the helicopter arriving and coming in to land, briefly circling before descending onto the beach. Recorded from the clifftops above, you can clearly hear when the helicopter drops below the level of the cliff from the way the sound changes.

  • Mountains of heaven
Kazarman, Kyrgyzstan reimagined by Andrew Howden.

"Inspired by Kyrgyzstan mountain range The Tian Shan and the celestial spirits that reside in the mountain in Tengri religion.

"The field recording of Kyrgyz voices and the sound of a rumbling accelerating vehicle going off into the distance, which provide the base to the composition as well as processed samples, provided me with an idea of setting out on a journey to visit the Tian Shan mountain range, leaving the village behind and eventually arriving at the mountains in all their splendour and spiritual beauty with connection to the heavens and Earth."

  • Vignettes of BabyKat as she makes the rounds In Porto
Mercado Bolhao reimagined by John Tenney.

"Follow BabyKat on an imaginary ground-level journey as her feet take her through Porto, Portugal’s “second city,” asking for snacks in markets and cafés, visiting a church, riding a tram, being an independent free spirit.

"By the way, almost all the sounds you hear are in fact from Porto; the church service and procession are from the central Portuguese city of Viseu. Also, this piece is dedicated to the real-life BabyKat, who died in 2018, and definitely was an all-round free spirit! I’m glad I recorded her voice."
