  • I don't really pack much
A380 landing reimagined by Una Walker.

"A layering of the original recording with passenger conversations and aircraft sounds and the sound of someone walking on gravel paths, birdsong, wind in trees, and an interior voice repeating phrases from the overheard/overhead conversation.

"I live in a rural area on the east coast of Ireland but under a flight path. During the first lockdown the silence was palpable and when flights increased again I downloaded an app so that I could identify the origin and destination of flights I could hear above me. When I listened to the original recording (028) and heard voices I was reminded that there were people aboard those flights having inconsequential conversations ("I don't really pack much."). My field recordings were made on the forest trails near my house where I have walked almost every day in the last year, and where I have noted the transatlantic flights 30-40,000 feet above me."

  • Vagabond ears
New York metro reimagined by Dana Papachristou.

"The original recording captured my ears as New York was the last place I visited before the coronavirus lockdown. I used the familiar M train sounds to create an aural condition where the ear, tired from a full day, falsely recognizes rhythm and melody in everyday sounds. A recreation of a travel experience, until we travel again."

  • Hearts, flowers and rocks
Children playing in Haiti reimagined by Cities and Memory.

"What stood out from the original recording was the sound of children playing in a carefree way, without doubt the outstanding moment from the source material.

"Taking as a rough starting point the wistful melancholia and hauntology of the now-defunct Hood, I wondered how this recording might have ended up if it had featured on one of their albums. This led to starting off with a couple of interlacing acoustic guitar patterns with lots of space in them, allowing a sample of the children from the original recording to poke through and take its place as an essential part of the soundscape. Following on from here, the piece grew organically, with the addition of a smooth, simple bassline, and final embellishments from multiple layers of effected guitar and strings to add an emotional lift in the second half. I wanted something that ultimately felt hopeful and even a shade sentimental, but with a clear undercurrent of longing."

  • Adoro_(2..0).pow
Bogota taxi ride reimagined by Wingel Mendoza.

"The recording happened inside a taxi in Colombia, in which the taxi driver was playing a Mexican song singed by Armando Manzanero. I immediately recognized it, so there was the Latin American identity, but how to interact with the sound, but more in a plastic way, to manipulate it or make it not recognizable? Like all the situation that we are living in, the sound unfolds in uncertain ways, but it never loses its identity, waiting to listen again."
