Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • A journey
Montevideo bus station reimagined by Peter Brooks.

"The original piece is the ambient sound in a bus station, which inspired me to think of journeys and from there reminded me of Kraftwerk's Autobahn.

"The piece uses the original recording in full as a background to set the tone. It builds to suggest a sense of movement but also the repetitive monotony of waiting to begin, and hints at the Kraftwerk piece. The announcer's voice marks the start of the journey which suggests a busy road journey with vehicles passing by and making themselves known as often happens in countries with less-strict traffic regulations.

"The piece was built using Logic Pro X and sound sources from a Moog 15 (App version) and BBC Symphony Orchestra from Spitfire Audio.

"As regards travelling this year - I yearn for it!"

  • Taxi journey in Bogota
"This recording was taken just after lunchtime during a trip across Bogotá in a taxi. I remember it being a very warm day, and there was something about the combination of the general hubbub outside together with the music coming from the radio that made me want to pick up the microphone and capture the moment."

    Recorded by Jase Warner.

  • EZE/YTZ
EZE airport reimagined by Michael Trommer.

"This piece is a site-specific improvisation performed on a portable 1010 Blackbox sampler in the deserted lobby pavilion of Toronto’s Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) – a regional airport situated on a Lake Ontario island across from the city’s downtown core.

"Sounds of the quasi-deserted site were recorded in situ and combined with the project’s source sample (EZE Buenos Aires airport ambience) in an effort to create an sonic interzone meshing the performance locale’s ghostly, Covid-emptied ambience and the imagined space of Buenos Aires’ Ezeiza International Airport."

  • Tracks and traces
Lisbon tram reimagined by Richard Gadd.

"I was attracted to the rhythmic elements of the field recording and the sound of the leather hanging strap.

"As we cannot travel at present, I wanted to create something that was an act of imaginary travel, a dream constructed from memories of journeys. In those journeys there were experiences of sensory overload, culture shock, deep conversations with strangers, anxious waiting for pa announcements, hearing ambient sounds while in that liminal state between sleep and wakefulness. And at the end of every journey there is a new beginning."

  • Brasov
Taking a bus through the Romanian countryside, reimagined by Johan Vandermaelen.

"Pitch and filtering were the main tools. There is no time-stretching, thus all rhythmic elements are in a direct relationship with the file, with no additional sounds. I kept some voices from the original recording to keep it 'real'. Volume is mostly low, as I didn't want to over-compress or limit this piece."

  • Eléctrico 28
"This is a trip on the famous and old tram 28, in Lisbon, between Largo da Graça and Estrela, mirroring the acoustic dynamics of this means of transport and the city itself."

    Recorded by Luís Antero.

  • HKG
Hong Kong airport terminal reimagined by Coxidelic.

"In the original recording I was struck by the normality of it... how it felt like a relic of a bygone time when travel was normal and there was no pandemic. I wanted to take this sound and turn it into something more chaotic and confused like the times we are living in. Downtempo, of course - because we are all sitting on our couches."
