  • 3312: Manhattan Friday morning symphony
New York lockdown sound recorded by Andrew Marcus.
"In this recording we can hear a fire truck, construction on a new building, traffic, cars honking, and the general background noise of Manhattan becoming more and more active post-COVID-19."

  • 3311: One string bass and a night train in Toowoomba
Toowoomba coal train reimagined by Clelia Ciardulli.
"The piece spoke to me about solitude in the night, listening to the bare essential structures out there still working. I sat alone at night with my 'one-string' electric bass 'thinking' of how many of us listen more acutely in isolation, of how I could connect myself, and the place I live, Govanhill, Glasgow, Scotland with that person in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, what feeling could run through both of us."

  • 3308: Bird cage craftsmen, Hoi An
"One of the main traditional hobbies of the locals is to build and adorn bird cages. The Hanoi bird market became the centre of creativity where craftsmen villagers whittle the bamboo splints to make the bottom of cages together with making and decorating the brims and assembling the parts, while the locals handle the business of selling birds, birdcages and food.
"Here I was welcomed to record the sounds by the bird sellers. Sadly a birdcage can contain ten birds, which unfortunately does not leave much space for them to move as is reflected in this recording."

  • 3309: Hoi An night market
"Night markets have their own character and are popular destinations for local people and travellers alike. Hoi An night market is widely known as one of the most joyful markets in Vietnam.
"The night time here becomes very entertaining as most bars and restaurants have karaoke music nights that are held on the roof terraces overlooking the locals decorating their boats with colourful lanterns. The old town transforms into a walking area for the night.
"Hoi An night market is a perfect place for locals and travellers to have a breathtaking view overlooking the Thu Bon river and roam around the food stalls that offer a traditional variety of Vietnamese street food.
"Vendors are selling their specialty dishes such as seafood; scallops, octopus, squid and the inevitable frog sticks. Every sound of human interaction tells a story. As the Vietnamese people go along with their daily lives, this soundscape resembles how wonderful it is to just be able to take the time to sit back and listen to them."

  • 3307: The droning sea, Hoi An
"Vietnam might not top the list of the most beautiful gold sand beaches although it does feature a quite stunning coastline along with the quiet peace of the countryside.
"To escape the heat and harsh rays of the sun, it is recommended to come to the beach in the early morning and call it a relaxing day away from the hustle-bustle of the town.
"At Hidden Beach, if you are lucky you can even have the beach just to yourself and meet the local fishermen on their unique round boats.
"Mornings are quiet and suitable for long walks along the beach, although my favourite time is when the sun is going down. Imagine you are sat on a lush, beautiful beach. You feel the warm, tiny sand between your toes and you sit and hear the gentle waves breaking onto the shore. "

  • 3304: Times Square monologue
Times Square, New York under lockdown reimagined by Patrick Bridge.
"I was interested in the rhythm of the voice, the reference to covid 19 and the brief personal story it contained. I layered this exchange in a pretty intuitive way to give a sense of a break up of familiar linear narrative. There's a monotony which accompanies the current lockdown and that was something that I played around with too."

  • 3301: De-evolution of the millennial lunch break
New York lockdown sound by Rachel Eisenberg.
"The relative quiet and brief interlude of birds and running water (from our little man-made pond) on the deck of my parents house. At the end, you can hear my mom ask if I'm going to go for a run with my dad. This is not the lunch break I was having 6 months ago, nor the place I was living."

  • 3299: Terraza a la autopista
Buenos Aires lockdown sound recorded by Claudio Barros.
"This is a recording made from the door of my studio that overlooks a small terrace, in the middle of the afternoon, located 50 meters from the "25 de Mayo Highway" that crosses the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
(Yes there are houses 50 meters from the highway and up to five and less meters from it. That does not meet the distance regulations, but this is Argentina.)
"During the preventative and compulsory social isolation ordered by the current Government on the occasion of Covid-19, traffic has been reduced to 50% of the usual.
"The background noise from the highway remains more or less the same. Presenting a little less sound intensity throughout the day, with some peaks of agitation, reducing considerably at night. What is perceived as different from the usual and more clearly, at some times of the day, is the individual sound of some cars as they pass.
"Argentina is having, until now, one of the strictest and longest quarantines."

  • 3297: Echo
Klaipeda, Lithuania lockdown sound recorded by Odetta Prall.
"This sound I created with my close friend during isolation time, it was interesting to talk to each other and hear the echo sound and experience."

  • 3296: For the country
Sound of an NHS worker preparing protective equipment reimagined by Cristina Marras.
"I spent 2 months in full lockdown in Italy. I was allowed to get out only because I had to bring food to my 84yo mother who was not allowed to go out because she is at very high risk.
"During the lockdown we lived in panic, the few people you met, crossed the street to be as far away from each other as possible. It was all very strange. Now, we have entered phase 2 and no one really knows what it means, some people are going back to their life ignoring distancing and masks, other are regretting the end of phase 1.
"I am thinking about those who were working during the lockdown period, nurses (my brother is one of them), doctors, carers: if people ignore the new guidelines, will their work have been for nothing? It feels like it's all a big lottery, amidst the incapacity of politicians and the ignorance of the people."
