  • 3294: Campo de Fiori in lockdown
Rome lockdown sound recorded by Francesco Tomei.
"During phase 2 of the lockdown, a city like Rome has seen its inhabitants live again its streets, squares and markets. No tourists on the streets, just locals, workers, families and old ladies. You can hear the sounds of the local fruit and vegetable market in Piazza Campo de' Fiori in Rome, the voices of the sellers, the stacked boxes and the locals who go to shop."

  • 3284: The "Go Home and Stay Home" Radio Club At Home
La Paz lockdown sound reimagined by Emmy Tither.
"I've been listening to a lot of, and all sorts of, radio these past few months. It's almost like the sound of other people coming through the radio waves makes up for not being able to be with people. Or something. It's gotten to the stage now, isolation-wise, where everything sounds like it comes from a radio to me now, even normal real-life sounds like a flushing toilet or birdsong or someone chatting on their phone outside. All sounds, now, are a weird mix of comforting and eerie to me, because they all sound like they come from so far away. Which is to say... from a safe distance. "

  • 3285: Deep Away
North Indian monastery lockdown sound reimagined by Concha Garcia.
"During these weeks of confinement, listening to an “outside” that speaks of a distant environment may be the starting point for triggering an “inside”, in a mimetic way or in an evocative and associative way: a chaotic “inside” that wants to be arranged and that talks about contradictory moods, with untimely thoughts, contradictory feelings, messy ideas and with the struggle to order them. This “inside” is eventually carried away, again, by the calm of the “outside” in a tireless movement."

  • 3287: The Ballad of Coronasilence feat. Hugh Sykes
London lockdown sound reimagined by Sherman and Field.
"We particularly responded to the focus on silence in the field recording. The absence of one sound creates space for the hearing of another. Shifting listening from a work building elsewhere to being at home in a quieter than normal suburb has had the same effect for us, on the other side of the world.
"Our lived experience of home isolation since March has been one where the external environment has been filled with birdsong and the routine passes of aircraft from Amberley air force base some days and nights. In between, the dampened neighbourhood activity has shifted the typical area quietness. The positive outcome of this period of home isolation has been a slower world around us.
"We combined the field recording with a selected sample lifted from an improvised work created during our own period of isolation. This was recorded late one evening using effects-drenched guitar, analogue synth devices and drum machine."

  • 3283: My safe environment
Heteren, Netherlands lockdown sound recorded by Julia Gerritsen.
"During these circumstances, I try new things that I can do indoors. An example is that I paint a lot and try out new techniques, the sound has to do with this.
"Here in the Netherlands the rules are being let go more and more little by little, we just have to keep it up together."
