  • 3041: Doing the dishes
Orange County, USA lockdown sound recorded by Sylvie Messing.
"This is a recording of a task I find incredibly mundane yet equally meditative - doing the dishes. We don't have a dishwasher in my home, so we do all of our dishes by hand. Therefore it's super important to stay on top of dishes.
"Here in California, the COVID-19 outbreak has been especially bad; my days are filled with lots of cooking to stay occupied, hence lots of dishes. I thought this would be an honest look into what takes up a lot of my day in quarantine. Additionally, I've been bleaching my utensils, so at the end you can hear me clanking them around and hand drying them.
"It's fascinating to me how such a simple chore actually has huge implications to maintaining my health at this time."

  • 3040: Fresh afternoon in the desert
Ciudad Juarez, Mexico lockdown sound recorded by Lorena Mondragon.
"This is the sound out of my room window in my parent's house. Spring has arrived, and with a large fig tree in the backyard, many birds are attracted during the day. The skies are blue with fluffy white clouds. People here usually have dogs in their backyards, so it's normal to hear them barking at passing birds.
"Things in Mexico seem uncertain. Official numbers are pretty low in comparison to other countries, so there is an air of mistrust in the government. Many people are staying home, but many others are still acting carelessly."

  • 3038: Out for a walk
Loughborough, UK lockdown sound recorded by Andy Billington.
"Lisa, Sofia and I went out in the sun across the fields for our daily exercise session and dropped out onto Woodhouse Lane. We couldn't go through the woods as they are currently closed and as the road turned into a path towards the edge of Loughborough I stopped and took the picture of the pond next to the Road before recording myself walking up the hill on my phone. My wife and daughter walked ahead.
"So what has changed for me? Working from home is different, new but manageable. I am able to exercise still and shop locally for modest supplies. I am also loving the lack of cars on the road.
"I grew up in a rural village called Seagrave so we were well versed in isolation. The rules are easy to align with at the moment. We take nothing for granted which is important."

  • 3037: The sounds of Nowruz, Tehran
Tehran lockdown sound by Negar Zojaji.
"The lockdown due to Corona virus in Iran happened at the same time with the Persian new year.
"Despite the lockdown and empty streets buskers occasionally play the Sorna and the Dohol on the streets of residential neighborhoods.
"Dohol and Sorna are two traditional musical instruments that are particularly played on festive ceremonies like that of the advent of new year."

  • 3035: From my terrace, Veracruz
Veracruz, Mexico lockdown sound recorded by Fernando Gonzalez Garcia.
"Due to the coronavirus pandemic in Mexico (we are now in the second phase), we have seen the need to stay home for our own safety and health.
"So taking advantage of the quarantine, I have had the opportunity to record some soundscapes from my terrace. Some I have recorded during the day and others at night. In general, the place where I live is quite calm, it is a suburban area. The name of the small town is Miradores del Mar."

  • 3034: Brazilian popular music in a peripheral neighbourhood, where isolation is not a reality
Sao Paulo lockdown sound by Vinicius Santos Almeida.
"In the Jardim Belém neighborhood, in the Ermelino Matarazzo district, east of the city of São Paulo, Brazil, the population is not exactly confined inside their home.
"Traffic has not decreased so much. The supermarkets are full, perhaps even more than usual; many elderly people buying bread and cleaning products in the morning.
"And on the streets, music. It is common for people to party in the streets all night (from Thursday to Sunday without stopping). In the first week of isolation, there was a decrease in the occurrence of these parties, but after that, they returned. Very loud music, barbecue on the street, people walking around, young men having fun with motorcycles - certainly less than usual, but you can't call that isolation.
"Is there another way to consume art and have fun in neighbourhoods without sufficient cultural facilities, where access to the internet depends on the low income of residents, where houses are extremely small, full of people and insalubrious?"

  • 3032: Canción cuarentena
Guadalajara lockdown sound recorded by Odin Acosta Ascencio.
"I am in Mexico in Guadalajara city, and to be more accurate in Zapopan. I remember from my childhood these musicians who go around the streets and  a kid goes door by door asking for money as a gratitude for the music.
"We are doing well, we are going to overcome, in my community there is a movement called "no one's broke here" where restaurants and other businesses are opening for takeaway only."
