  • 2825: Heavy boat traffic in Venice
Venice is unlike any other city, but it does experience its fair share of traffic - in this case, it's boat traffic.
Outside the railway station is one of the busiest stretches of the Grand Canal, and here we listen to the constant humming of boat traffic in front of us, and tourists arriving into the city in their thousands behind us. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 2824: From above
Valparaiso city ambience reimagined by Shaun Malone.
"I wanted to create a sound collage progressing from the most natural parts of the original recording through to the most man-made, representing the uncontrolled development of a city, getting louder and more chaotic, and eventually spiralling out of control.
"A critical mass is reached leading to a sudden change and return to nature. Whether this change is due to a disaster or a breakthrough is left undecided."

  • 2823: Vamp Chile
Street drummers in Santiago reimagined by Paul Collins.
"My music often eschews the regular beat, and it is only too seldom that I have the opportunity to play with a live drummer, let alone a whole horde them.
"With this field recording of street drummers in Santiago, I attempted to create a song that swings. It’s infectious."

  • 2822: Infill
Joan Jonas exhibition sounds reimagined by Logan Austeja Daniel.
"Infill is a city planning practice to build within the available spaces, unused lots, or on top of buildings, instead of expanding development outwards away from the city. This creates a rich and closely-packed environment. Animals also infill their vocalizations, as with frogs croaking around ponds, an insect chorus in the evening, or bird flocks singing at dawn. Different species claim their own range to be heard through the din.
"As city sounds encroach on the natural sounds surrounding them, animals adjust further. Birds re-pitch their songs around human noise, or change when they sing, in order to be heard during quieter times. This piece explores these available spaces, with recordings primarily from indoor museums and city parks. Layered soundscapes infill each other, letting insects, museum exhibits, airplanes, and birds, share what remains of the environment between them.
"All field recordings were recorded by Logan on location in California & Wyoming (USA), Borneo, and Spain; except excerpts from "009 ITALY Venice Joan Jonas Ocean Space exhibition Chiesa di San Lorenzo April 2019" recorded by "Cities and Memory".  Music was performed by Venice biennial sound artists, CA Exploratorium Museum performers, Spain street buskers."

  • 2821: Expanded commons
Essaouira gnaoua reimagined by Andrew Weathers.
"The sound of street performers in a place I've never been, stretched, shifted, cut-up. We're simultaneously losing and widening the commons, so the abstraction of the sound of the commons seems to make sense."

  • 2820: This is the sound of gnaoua
Place Moulay is one of the busiest spots in the otherwise pretty tranquil city of Essaouira - a prime spot for buskers to show off their skills performing the famous local music form gnaoua. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 2819: Performing street drummers, Santiago
The street drummer is a traditional music form in Chile, with the drummers performing often-elaborate dances at the same time as drumming out complex polyrhythms, with foot-controlled drum triggers.
Here we hear a troupe of four drummers performing on the streets of Santiago.
    Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 2817: Parallels
Padova tram reimagined by Dan Wack.
"The idea behind 'Parallels' is an undefined journey. The original location recording from Italy contains a train journey.
"So instead of defining a start, or end, for the piece. I instead created a soundscape that could run forever - from destination, to destination; but never resolving.
"It was also important to me that I did not overshadow the location audio, as that sets the scene very effectively."

  • 2816: Divulsion
Berlin bell swing reimagine by Keira Simmons.
"Divulsion: An endlessly slow, graceful, painful, violent tearing apart, a breaking down of understanding. This piece is a condensed version of a live set I performed recently.
"I was interested in creating for the listener a painful stillness, an inability to move or look away from something equally horrifying and beautiful, like many things in our world today (things both small and big, personal and public).
"Using PaulXStretch and my handmade granular patch I froze the church bells in time, and using my broken record player I captured a deep, violent drone and a stuck song.
"It’s rare in my Cities and Memory reimaginings that I include the original audio recording in its entirety, but these bells were so haunting and relentless, and gave a deep sense of inevitability."
