Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 2285: Strattoni
    Reimagined by Marie Rose.
"The recording had too loo volume. So I increased the volume and then I used a simply granulator as an effect more and more times. I wanted to take distance to natural sounds. just at the end I inserted a natural field recording with the original sound inside. my approach has been only digital (I worked only with the computer)."

  • 2286: Shallow Waters
Reimagined by Maeve Moayedi - WNNR.
"There's a lovely consistency to the sound of frogs at night, but if you listen closely, there are beautiful moments that stand out for each individual voice. So I thought, if I gated the sound of the frogs to another rhythmic source, it'd be a constantly evolving percussive sound. The track evolved naturally around what I heard from that experiment. There's also a nice sidechained, super-high-passed version of the source sound in which you can really hear the air of the night and all the frogs calling out to one another."

  • 2284: Spirans In Terra
    Reimagined by Clutch Daisy.
"I had to search online to find out what a ‘mofette’ was when I received the link to the sound file I was assigned for this project. I’d never heard the word before. ‘Fumarole’ came up, and although I’d some distant recognition, I still couldn’t place it. It turns out it’s the name for volcanic discharge, usually of gas, commonly carbon dioxide. I thought of greenhouse gases, and our own respiratory function. This is the sound of the planet exhaling - the breathing earth. Playing with ‘non-musical’ sounds lends itself to experimentation, and my usual go-to is to stretch and play with pitch and intonation. There are three instances of the mofettes sample on this track. First, the original, which is the rapid upper register bubble and clicks. Secondly, there is that same sample stretched to over an hour in length, excerpted, and then delved into for lurking harmonic content. This time, I sourced an inverted pedal which runs throughout the track. Finally, there is the breathing itself. It sounds guttural and laboured in places - infected, even. On life support, perhaps… Piano, and synths were improvised, with hope in mind."

  • 2287: hemiptera.447
    Reimagined by Michael McDermott.
"I heard many interesting polyrhythms in the layers of crickets. Also there was a natural filter sweep of frequencies as different layers of crickets and cicada came in and out of focus. I used these two sonic reference points as ways to manipulate the sounds to create the remix. I used several layers of granular sampling and spacial movement to create the illusion of being inside of this dense fog of insects."

  • 2287: Insect chorus of the bush
    Recorded by Marg Laing.
"An orchestra of crickets and their like, with the odd bird tweet in the dense bush outside my chalet at Hluhluwe Game Reserve in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. Recorded 1 Jan 2017."

  • 2285: Rain in the Draznya forest
    Recorded by Christine Brihier.
It was a rainy day at the begining of july and I decided to take some rain sounds in a deep pine forest in the outskirts of Minsk. Recorded with Zoom H6 and binaural Roland CS 10 EM.

  • 2284: Mofettes
    Recorded by Piet Schen.
"Geophonic sound of post-volcanic activity in the lake of Maria Laach, Germany. Here, there are mofettes, in which carbon dioxide emerges from the bottom to the surface."

  • 2283: Babi Besar
    Reimagined by Mohammed Rowe.
"After listening to the original recording I decided to visualise a short scene in my head and write a short sound piece to it. The main use of the pig sounds were to create a sound for a monster like creature by processing the audio in a few ways.
I guess the initial narrative of it is an explorer who is venturing around an undiscovered place where he then discovers "Babi Besar" but I guess it could be anything... it's up to the listener to decide."

  • 2282: Green dream
    Reimagined by Luis Antero.
"The original piece led me to a dark place in the forest. What I have tried to do is precisely the antithesis of this idea, that is, from that sound universe, to create another, very different, in the attempt to create an ecological dream..."
