  • 2221: Sand grains on the beach
"The recording is set on a beach in Northern Portugal. Nobody was around, the town behind felt very quiet. The wind was blowing strongly, making the ocean roar, and sending the dry sand flying over the wet sand." Recorded by Allysse Riordan.

  • 2221: V#1
    Reimagined by Nicolas Hermansen.
"I was inspired by the drone like sound bed of the sound recording and its contrasting little noises, the grains rolling. This contrast creates a sonic game for the ear made out of fast transient sounds and slow evolving sounds. It stimulates your curiosity and refocuses constantly the center of interest while listening.
My main focus with this composition is the transfer of energy between the sound piece and the listener, shifting the attention toward a visceral understanding of the composition and a bigger than life image of the minute grains of sand. To achieve this, I felt that working with granular synthesis was an obligatory action, since the original recording is about grains rolling."

  • 2221: By the brook
    Reimagined by Ablaut.
"The sample is a recording of a quiet brook, which lends itself to a meditative piece. So I set up a generative ambient patch in VCV Rack using two modules with physical modeling of sympathetic strings, modulated by LFOs based on strange attractors. The resulting instrument somewhat resembles a Chinese guzheng. I imagine sitting by the brook and peacefully playing a stringed instrument like this."

  • 2220: Recurrence
    Reimagined by Shaun Malone.
"I was interested in exploring the texture, rhythm and pattern of the cicada sounds. After experimenting for a while with pitch shifting, effects and looping, I eventually found inspiration by using a very short piece of the recording as a sample and using this to create patterns of volume, panning and pitch shift changes. After the first section of the piece I bring in a longer sample with the original cicada sounds so the artificial and real patterns can be heard side by side. The final section involves pitch shifting lower and lower to round off the piece."

  • 2220: Cicadas before the summer goes
The chirping of the cicadas in the late summer days in Tokyo. I made the recording at the end of September 2012 in Setagaya-Ku, west Tokyo. in a small garden close to the house where I've spent a few days. This sound announces the late summer days, then with the beginnning of fall the cicadas will die. Therefore the cicadas are a symbol of the going by summer. Sometimes the sound changes or stops within a day rapidly. Recorded by Gabriella Disler.

  • 2220: Vodno
    Reimagined by Fernando Carvalho.
"I listened like there was an inner rhythm in the recording. It grew on me and I started to look for a tone and a tempo that flowed with the sound. I found the main loop and started building from there. It has been a very nice experience."
