Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 1845: Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo, Japan
The world-famous Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, recorded by Giulia Biasibetti. From all four corners, billboards blast out music and speech-based advertising selling all kinds of products. Underpinning this is the constant drone of traffic from all sides and the chatter of hundreds of people passing by. A chaotic but iconic soundscape.

  • 1842: On the airwaves of Riyadh
Call to prayer reimagined by Cities and Memory.
Saudi Arabia is a country of subtexts and undercurrents, particularly in its current state of transition. In listening to a typical call to prayer broadcast out into the midday sunshine from a nearby minaret, I wanted to explore what else might be hidden on the airwaves across Riyadh, if only we knew which bandwidths to tune into. Blended in are other calls to prayer and idents/interval signals from Saudi radio stations, both present and from the 1970s - pirate radio, illicit music and late-night broadcasts are suggested over the audible soundscape of Riyadh.

  • 1840: Old Bagan (live mix)
Old Bagan horse and carriage recording reimagined by Dave Webb:
"I chopped out five loops from the original sample, which I chose as it straight away suggested potential percussive loops. I played those loops in a DJ mixing app on my phone, looped, then split them into bass, mid and treble and fed them through several effects chains, before mixing them all back together again.
"All performed live, channeling, I hope, my disgust at the terrible way human beings can treat each other."
