Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 1795: That sound that you weren’t supposed to hear
    Reimagined by John Wiggins.
"Many times recording in the field, I felt a little like a spy. I used to record at the pay phones in a busy train station and then edit the one-sided conversations together, so I am a bit of a sneak. And I always loved that sound that you weren’t supposed to hear, a snippet of dialog, someone’s headphones blasting as they walk by, yelling way over there. That’s what the San Pedra de Atacama School marching band rehearsing seemed to be to me. They’re still working on it and they’re playing somewhere over there. The DIN that always fascinated me so. I just tried to be part of the band."

  • 1793: Puerto Natales - Freight remix
Chile ferry sound reimagined by Karhide.
"The whole tract was built around the synth sounds created with the field recording and Audio Damage Automaton. Additional glitched and filtered versions of the field recording are layered to add the additional sounds. The only other samples used are the kick, snare, clap and closed hi hat. The initial track was started in FLStudio and then mixed in Sonar."

  • 1787: Birds inside the Pantheon
    Reimagined by Cities and Memory.
Looking up at the circular hole in the roof of the Pantheon, sunlight pouring through and illuminating its perfect architecture, is a mesmerising moment. Simultaneously I imagined how it would be if songbirds flew in through the roof and circled overhead, calling, and brought to mind some of the devotional sounds that just being in this space conjured up inside me. These two feelings came together in the reimagined piece, in which I imagined that the voice next to me ("twelve, sixteen, twenty...") was counting the flying songbirds above us.
