  • 1785: The street cafe that busked itself
Street cafe in Mallorca reimagined by Cities and Memory - every sound you hear here is derived from the original recording, processed and manipulated by various tools. The field recording is "playing" the processors, creating all of the bass sounds, synths, pulses and melodic loops.

  • 1783: Big Ben: the four-year wait
Recomposed version of Big Ben's final chimes for four years - since we have to wait until 2020 to hear Big Ben's iconic bongs again, we've stretched them out to last almost 20 minutes to symbolise London's wait, and to emphasise the sheer beauty of their tones. Reimagined by Cities and Memory.

  • 1782: Big Ben rings for the final time in four years
Big Ben rings at midday on 21 August 2017, the last time the iconic bell will ring until 2020 due to repairs and restoration. The silencing of the bell has been the subject of much controversy and media coverage in late August in the UK. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 1781: Lèse–majesté
Reimagined sounds of Bangkok's Grand Palace - underneath the incredible surface gold, glitz and grandeur of the Grand Palace is a constant reminder of the incredible importance of the king to Thailand, and of the country's strict lèse–majesté laws, which prohibit anything which may defame or insult the Thai royal family, and a reminder of the country's ongoing struggles with democracy. Reimagined by Cities and Memory.

  • 1779: Tramonto nella Citta Bianca
Reimagined version of the sounds of Ostuni's swift calls at sunset. The frantic 180bpm drums bring to mind the speed and skill of the birds' flight as they fill the skies with their screeching calls, hurtling from place to place. This is contrasted with gentle, warm synth pads that convey the heat, the beauty and the much slower pace down at ground level in the town. Reimagined by Cities and Memory.

  • 1778: The swifts of Ostuni, Italy
Every evening at dusk, in the centre of Ostuni in Puglia, Italy, hundreds of swifts come out and fill the sky with their screeching calls. This is their time, and the Citta Bianca is their city - its inhabitants simply have to coexist on the ground, with the swifts circling above. Recorded by Cities and Memory, June 2017.
