  • 1696: Alone in the Crowd (Paris)
COP protest reimagined by Mark Taylor.
"I absolutely loved this field recording by Ben Gale and wanted to highlight it’s qualities as much as possible in my remix – one of the reasons why you will hear it at the beginning and end of my piece with no editing whatsoever!
This composition was inspired by my own experiences on various protest marches over the years and my ability to almost completely shutdown external stimuli; to be ALONE IN THE CROWD. It’s a defence mechanism really, but at times almost spiritual – an ‘out of crowd’ experience! I don’t enjoy large gatherings that much at all and I think my brain simply needs time-out from the revelry!
My piece starts with Ben’s field recording in its raw state.
Slowly the sounds of protest morph, warp and fade into the background.
They continue to ebb and flow, almost like a living breathing creature, but always slightly distant / faded.
A simply, dissonant piano motif represents me in the middle of the throng. A choir theme adds that little edge of spirituality!
The piano and choir fade away. Slowly the sounds of protest re-enter my consciousness and I rejoin the masses.
Warped Sounds of Protest – Reaktor 5 (Metaphysical Function with 14 layers of automation)
Piano – Kontakt 5 (‘Giant’ piano module)
    Voices – Omnisphere (Boys Choir)"

  • 1695: COP protests in Paris, 2015
    Recorded by Ben Gale.
"This is a recording of the Red Lines protest on 12th December 2015 - The final day of the COP21 United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Paris. The protest was arranged to make sure that “the people had the last word”: to show that the is a global movement who want to apply pressure to leaders of countries and see that the “redline” of climate change targets laid out in negotiactions are not crossed. With Donald Trump currently debating whether to pull out of the COP21 climate agreement, this piece seems to become more relevant again. A reminder that there are people willing to go out on the streets and stand up for our planet."

  • 1693: Endless Cry (Hamburg)
Hamburg anti-ISIS protest reimagined by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter.
"We created a sound collage that incorporated newly created musical elements, sound effects, and percussion with the original protest audio. This piece is intended to evoke the feelings of sadness and anger of the protestors and take the listener into their internal experience. Production was completed using Logic Pro X, PaulStretch, and WaveBurner."

  • 1692: Insider (Le Pen in Oxford)
Oxford anti-Le Pen protest reimagined by Andrey Markov.
"The idea is to show a part of social inside that is silent but always waiting for the ‘toll drum moment” to arise. I’ve mostly used ‘deconstructions’ of original sound. Additional sounds are glass samples, breath and water tank punches all recorded by myself. At the end some standard sound design fx processing like delay, reverb, eq, comp, distortion etc.. Produced and mixed in Pro Tools."

  • 1691: Don't close our banks (Barcelona)
    Recorded by Robert van Riel.
"This sound is from Barcelona, Spain, on Las Ramblas, in front of a closed bank office of Banco Popular, Rambla dels Estudis, 128, 08002 Barcelona. The protest (as I understood) was about the bank closing more small offices all over the country and/or pension related troubles, due to the banking crisis in Spain. It was just a small protest and at times sounded more like a social event."

  • 1688: Cântarea (Fagaras, Romania)
Romanian protest against emergency laws reimagined by Richard Watts.
"The original recording had lots of chants so I have used one of those as the basis for the piece. There was also lots of trumpets/horns and whistles so I have sampled those at various speeds and used them in the piece. The distorted sounds and distorted guitar is supposed to be the authorities make their presence known. I wanted to get a hypnotic rhythm going and then add overlaid sounds."

  • 1687: Against emergency laws, Romania
Recorded by Rebecca Toop and Maria Năstase.
"This audio was recorded during the recent Romanian protests (1st of February 2017), in Făgăraș, population 28,330. The protests were caused by new ‘emergency’ laws that the government tried to pass overnight, supposedly to relieve the prison system of overcrowding: the solution being to decriminalise corruption involving sums of less than 200,000 lei (£38,000).
This particular protest took the form of a march around town, taking us past the PSD office, at which point you can hear copious booing."
