Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • Rumore Bianco
Weir on the River Po reimagined by Julian Weaver.
"In the introduction to his last film The Turin Horse, Béla Tarr, after repeating the apochryphal tale of Friedrich Nietzsche's breakdown, ends with the statement "Of the horse… we know nothing."
This is the only veracious line, evidenced by Anacleto Verrecchia's 'La Catastrofe di Nietzsche a Torino', yet each retelling elaborates further; adding spurious detail until nothing but detail remains: perfect post-truth interference.
I've take an additive approach; the white noise of the weir on the River Po with those of equine breaths and freshets at the Hydro near Blarney, Co. Cork, Ireland."

    Recorded by Patrick Franke.
"The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi is not only the most important sacred site for kazakh muslims, it is also a breeding site for about hundred pairs of Common Myna Acridotheres tristis tristis and Western Jackdaw Corvus monedula soemmeringii, which breed in cavities, formed by erosion all over the frontage of the building."

  • The haunted graveyard (Little Washbourne)

    Reimagined by Ian Pearce.
"I tried to use the feel of approaching the church through the haunted graveyard amidst the fog so I added some moog drones and after delaying the footsteps at the start as percussion added a simple beat to work in dissonance with the peal of the bells to create disorientation. I tried to muffle the bells a little to become clearer towards the end of the piece."

  • Underneath the noise, the bell still tolls
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Reimagined by Mike Pursley.
"The file chosen due to an interest in bells, with some irony the final draft was not bell-like, and instead came to resemble a digital laptop scape. My initial plan was to degrade the bell into a sort of time-worn ambience, but try as I might to distress the signal, the bell’s attack was too strong, too insistent. I decided then to break the bell apart, to change the state of its makeup. Metal base for an alchemical transformation. The original field recording went to tape, the tape recorded back into the laptop, the file scrambled by a Helium Vocal effect, the scrambled file played back and simultaneously recorded, and then simultaneously recorded once again. Three increasingly shattered playbacks running as one to produce the resulting version. Even then, underneath the noise, the signal still tolls."

  • Sounds from another place (Kazakhstan)
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Reimagined by John Wiggins.
"This Mausoleum was a place of worship, a spiritual location. To me that meant these sounds were from another place and I tried to invoke that dimension."
