  • The Organ and Trumpets of the Dom
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Reimagined by Mark Williamson.
"I chose these sounds as they reminded me of the source material I used for a track a few years ago. I created a piece using the sound of 30 nine year olds' first trumpet lesson. I like the idea of taking something that is not meant to be heard and doing something with it.
Multiple layers of stretched segments of organ and trumpet interact to create interesting effects. I'm never quite sure how the sounds will come out, and that is part of the magic."

  • Rehearsal at the Dom zu Luebeck, Germany

    Recorded by AJ Born.
"Someone opens the door of the dome for me.
At this day, in the dome is a rehearsal for a concert.
There are some tourists walking around and I am walking around as well.
Some trumpets and other instruments are practicing. In the end, the organ joins.
The incredible loud sound makes people run out of the dome onto the street."

  • Forward backward backward forward
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
Notre Dame reimagined by Manuel Guerrero.
"I chose that recording because the ambience generated by the toll of the bells it’s incredible: a half old, and a half contemporary, with the people speaking and the cellphone’s ringtones.
The creative process behind started with a consideration of the religious practices nowadays. In some moment of the history, religions made a great role in the development of human being, but today - with a lot of misunderstandings- it’s quite hard to say how good they are: with a lot of influence on the justifications of wars, murders, etc. The religious beliefs, in my opinion, represents a backward in many senses.
The reimagined sound was made with a lot of attention on the posibilites of panning and reverb: we listen on it a transition from left to right and vice versa in the headphones, between a track that is played forward and another one that goes backward. Just like how i think about religions beliefs against the human progress."

  • Campana della sera - the bells of Villa del Conte
The church bells in Villa del Conte ring for a sustained period three times per day - once in the morning to wake the town, once at lunchtime and once, as here, at 9pm to tell the town it's time to retire for the night. It's a long-standing tradition, and until fairly recently the bells were rung manually after the 9pm hour bells, with a volunteer cycling to the church three times a day to ring out the messages to the town.
Recorded by Cities and Memory, September 2016.
