  • As logical as an electric candle
Part of our Dada Sound project (February 2016) - see more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/dadasounds By Manuel Guerrero.
"I made this reimagined recording by collage. I think Kurt Schwitters was right when he destroyed the language in Ursonate to, in a certain way, prove that communication and logic in the culture weren’t working. We have a great collage of terms and phonemes; large archive of ways to talk with other people around the world but, till this day, everything seems to be only assembled strangely. In this point of the History, for every country and nation, i believe that cultures are gondolas on brave and dangerous waters- which, in a metaphor, means cultural instability- , with a difficult to land in a safe territory. We don’t know exactly where we are going from here and what’s gonna happen with us. Political protest are the waves on the shore that makes visible that question … that’s why I related the protest with the trouble of the water –Random, as a lot of Dada works- and collaged that sounds. That context, full of contradictions, turns culture in a structure as logic as an electric candle."

  • Mir vama /Peace to you

"Papst Franziskus visit to Sarajevo was definitely „the event“ of the year 2015 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Security measures where on the highest possible level and all together created a specific atmosphere in the town that remembers sounds of war very well.
I did not need to do anything accept to hear sounds, that where btw. unignorable, record them, think about the "sound semiotics" of the flow of these sounds and recognize one dadaistic comment in the contextual - time and space - moment and conceptual story behind this spontaneous “sound symbolism” that enabled a short travel trough memories of Sarajevo:
    Sarajevo - 1992 ...– ... out of nowhere religions rights came up ... – ... unpeaceful artists started to make... – ... noise ... – ... words of war...
Sarajevo - 2015... – ... church bells announce from the distance... – ... unpeaceful birds start to make ... – ... noise because of helicopters... –... at the end I just glued the words spoken by Papst himself saying: “Mir vama” /Peace to you/ as contrast to sounds that were created (in fact that is my minimal but effective intervention).
This field recording is one collage of sounds that are conceptually symbolizing social and political events of the past of this particular place. To me it was one - probably unwanted - public sound event with one conceptual message. Recording was made from the balcony at the 12 floor of the building; I recorded with TASCAM DR1, the helicopter flayed ten meters from the microphone and created by that this nice multidimensional approaching sound picture."

We have taken this recording and done the following to it; after processing for compatibility it was played on our BastlInstruments Microgranny 2.0 granular sampler. This was done 3 times. (All the sound in the finished piece derives from the 12 second field
recording, just to be clear.) The first version was played at "live speed", the second was played speeded up and the third slowed down. In all 3 instances granulation was applied so that the sample took more time than 12 seconds to play through, and 5 minutes (near enough) of each version was recorded. Each of the 3 versions was recorded as a track on a Boss BR-80 digital recorder. All were played at the same volume on the Microgranny via an attached speaker - a cardboard Phone speaker that only has an on/off switch. The three tracks were then mixed together on the Boss and mastered. All three were mixed with the same volume etc settings so that there was no chance that any one of them might in some way "predominate". The mastering produced the Wav file you now have. How is this "Dada"? Specifically - there was a huge element of CHANCE in the final outcome. We knew what each of the three tracks sounded like individually but did not know what the final product of the mastering would be until we heard it after the event.
Secondly, the way that we have played the three tracks "over" each other can be seen as our effort to continue the tradition of the
Simultaneous Poem - ours is a chant not a poem evidently - begun at the Cabaret Voltaire by Tristan Tzara, Marcel Janco and Richard Huelsenbeck.
