"In 2012 Softday created a live sound art work in response to the text of Sean Taylor's 2011 sound poem Dancing at the Crossroads of the End Times. The sound poem is augmented by an acousmatic composition created from our own field recordings and specific data sources relevant to the collapse of the Celtic Tiger here in Ireland, toxic banks and global recession.
Dancing at the Crossroads of the End Times addresses the malaise and meaninglessness of contemporary democracy - in what kind, we may well ask, of a democracy are we living in? It is a pertinent and urgent question that has to be addressed, and addressed courageously.
The fantasy of a united and neoliberal Europe (crudely exposed by the recent refugee/migrant crisis) has been undermined by the near collapse of economies in Greece, Portugal, and Ireland, followed hot on their heels by Spain, Belgium and Italy. These near bankrupt economies have become experimental laboratories of our future. We know now that the global financial meltdown at the end of 2008 brought an end to the utopia of global market capitalism and heralded the rise of a quasi-redemptive cultural capitalism where consumer guilt and environmentalism are very nervous bed fellows. As we approach a political zero point or end time for capitalism, what now of the cherished values of liberalism; freedom, welfare and security?
Dancing at the Crossroads of the End Times is an on-going composition in progress, that has been added to and augmented as new field recordings and data sources are utilised by the artists."

  • White Spring Spiritual
    By Lee Clift.
"One really grey rainy morning I made these field recordings at the White Spring just outside of the Glastonbury, below the Tor, the location is a very spiritual place that I have made numerous recordings of, both inside and out, that morning the Spring which is in an old Victorian built Well House was being prepared for the days opening by one of the volunteers that look after the attraction, he began chanting and the sound from the brick interior resonated beautifully it was one of those lucky moments, all of the water sounds that make up this piece are from the eternal outlet pipe that I have collaged together into a soundscape."

  • Panic train
    By DBPIT & XxeNa.
Crowded train with wailing toddlers recorded on the Jungfrau railroad, Switzerland
DADA techniques used in the making:
    - sound poem - the voices and wailing from sample #1 repeat themselves, sometimes overlapping on the stereo channels as in a multiple-speaker live poetry reading, with different tones, without actually saying nothing
    and
    - chance - several blocks cut out from sample #2 were fed into a virtual synth that played them in random order.

  • St. Pauli - 'unhappy' reimagining
    By AJ Born.
Some time ago, in July last year, I had decided to re-imagine a sound from my favorite football club FC St. Pauli. "Forza St Pauli" is a tune that is quite often heard in the Millterntor stadium. Therefore, it is not surprising that I had also recorded this tune some time before, and I got another version from a friend's video. So I had three recordings of different games of FC St. Pauli, which all included "Forza St. Pauli".
When I started, my idea was to capture the good mood that I associate with this club (beeing a supporter for a long time), and transform it into a sound. I mixed the three recordings so that they should sound like a typical football game with an extended version of "Forza St. Pauli". For some reason, I didn't finish it that day.
Plenty of water went down the river Elbe and lots of things happened, until I got back to this project at the end of November 2015. I was not in a cheerful mood this time, and created some dark sounds from the recordings. I mixed this with the happy song I started before and the result didn't make any sense. So I decided to split it and make two versions: A happy one, that sounds like a typical FC St Pauli football game. And an unhappy version, that might sound like the feeling I have, when the club is loosing a game.
