Jesus had a lot of fans but Jesus wasn’t riding into the city looking for fans. He was inviting people to follow and receive something even better than the things they had placed their hope in. As he observes, His heart breaks because their focus was off. If only they could understand the way to peace. Jesus doesn’t come to rearrange the outside of my life the way I want it to be. He comes to rearrange the inside of my life the way God wants it to be.

Instead of leadership and influence by authority, position or pay scale Jesus role modeled and called for a new way to lead. He flipped the script. It wasn’t about who had the most power but about being empowered to live out the message of Christ in a tangible way. A power under versus a power over. Jesus said the way to live is to live in service to one another.

Jesus presented a radical change in how the faithful should understand their relationship with God and one another. Faith is expressed in your vertical relationship with God and your horizontal relationships with people. If you took it to heart, how would taking Jesus’ new command change the way you view your faith? Love for God is best illustrated, demonstrated, and authenticated by love for others. What would it look like if we truly loved one another the way Jesus has loved us?
