  • October 20 2021 - Tom Mayenknecht (Host of The Sport Market), Keith Law (The Athletic Baseball Writer), Jeff Paterson (Canucks Reporter)

Keith Law, Baseball writer for the Athletic joined Matt and Blake to talk automated strike zones. Says we saw missed calls in both games. Can understand that there will be missed calls by umpires, some calls will be missed by automated strike calls. No technology will be right 100% of the time. Talked about the Arizona Fall League experiment. The unfortunate part is that there is lot more walks. They could recalibrate the system. Keith wants to see automated pitches being called but there will need to be a redefinition of the strike-zone. The umpire shouldn’t determine the length of the game. Says that Manfred spends talking about what is wrong with the game and not about what is right. Thinks that zone should be extended east to west, not north to south. Talked about Pivetta. Keith has been following him since A-ball. He is clear three-pitch guy now, compared to being a two-pitch guy in the minors. Talked about who he likes moving forward in the post-season. Freely admits he would have picked the Dodgers. Will still say the Dodgers despite the odds being against them. Thinks Houston could still do it despite the series not going the way.

Host of the Sport Market, Tom Mayenknecht joined Sekeres and Price to talk about how everything is happening, sports wise, right now. Started off by talking about full capacity at Rogers Arena. Says the Canucks were standing out like a sore thumb after every other team in the NHL got the blessing to move to full capacity. Can’t imagine how hard it’s been to market to season ticket holders on a hope and a prayer that it would move that way. It’s an advantage to have demand after a six game road trip but it can also come back and bite you in the butt if the performances aren’t there.

Our Canucks reporter, Jeff Paterson joined in his regular spot to offer his thoughts on a horrendous game by the Vancouver Canucks against Buffalo. JPat put it on the players. They had a chance to catch their breath and enjoy a football game in Detroit. Fatigue was not a factor. They just needed more from the guys that were there. Says that Travis Green agrees with him. He JPat himself on the back for calling on Bo to do ‘Do Something’, which he did. Talked about the defence and where they rank in the league. Talked about the practice that took place this morning and if it the coach cracking the whip was because of the performance last night. They were lucky it was a road game last night. We know what they would have faced at home in front of fans. Talked about Jason Dickinson calling the team soft. It was a jarring statement.

  • October 19 2021 - Jeff Paterson (Canucks Reporter), Patrick Johnston (The Province), Rod Black (Legendary Canadian Sports Broadcaster)

Jeff Paterson joined Matt and Blake, not in his regular spot but right off the hopper, for the Pregame Show. Naturally, started talking about the Arizona Coyotes and their woes after giving up 5 goals in 5 minutes last night. Transitioning… says their PK will need to step up with 4 of Buffalo’s 6 goals coming via the PP. Talked about Quinn Hughes and a curious pattern of him not being on the ice. Thinks that something is clearly bothering him.  Talked about Brad Hunt who is the likely replacement for QH tonight. In fact, through the hit news came in that QH would not be in the lineup. Talked about why Petan needed to be DFA’d. Talked about the last time the Canucks played Craig Anderson.

Patrick Johnston of Post Media joined Matt and Blake. Started off by chatting about full capacity. Doesn’t think they had any inside information but was the reason why they requested a road start. Has heard some squabble about not digitally checking vaccine records, only going with visual. Thinks it will be a full house as people just want to get back to doing things. Talked about what players who aren’t vaccinated can and can’t do. Finished off by talking about if he would take his family to an event.

The legendary sportscaster, Rod Black joined Matt and Blake to take a trip down memory lane after he parted ways with TSN last week. Talked about what he will miss the most. Right up there will be his broadcast partners. He had many covering so many different sports. Talked about what he wants to see more of. Referenced 30 for 30 and want to see more of those stories being told in Canada. Talked about the blessing and the curse that is never saying ‘no’. Professed his love for Figure Skating and what covering it meant to him. Talked about working the Raptors games from day one to them lifting a championship. Ran through the names of the people who worked in Basketball.

  • October 18 2021 - Charean Williams (NFL Insider), John Shannon (NHL Insider), Jeff Paterson (Canucks Reporter), Corey Basso (Vancouver Whitecaps FC Radio Play-by-Play)

Charean Williams, Mother Football, joined the guys to recap week 6 of the NFL season. Started off with the Seahawks and how they look with RW3 on the sidelines. She has never seen anything like it before. He was probably as involved as Geno Smith was in the game. He is trying to do his part while being out. She thinks Cam Newton makes perfect sense for them. Though, it might not make sense for Cam. He would want to go somewhere that isn’t temporary. They needed to do it last week after he got hurt. Talked about Dallas and their injured QB. They need to make sure he is fit so it doesn’t come back to bight them.

John Shannon, Monday regular joined Matt and Blake and started off by chatting about the broadcast quality for the NHL’s new American partners. Says that when they paid as much as they did they have a right to try new things but that existing methods are tried and true. Talked about Evander Kane and his 21 game suspension. Also about his thoughts on Travis Hamonic and his situation. Says the Canucks can’t even legally talk about his vaccination status. You take the team for their word and move on. Talked about the salary cap. Referenced Luongo’s contract that the Canucks are still paying. It hasn’t been a smooth ride from the start of the cap era but thinks that they’ve got almost every loop-hole closed. Talked about Tampa Bay and their familiar problems on the injury front. John says he doesn’t think Tampa is panicking. Even though they aren’t as deep as they were last year.

Jeff Paterson joined the show in his usual slot to talk about the Canucks. Started off by saying they haven’t scored first in any of their games. Says they may need to win a face off for starters. They are dead last in the league right now. EP40 can’t be a legitimate first line centre if he continues at 25% in the circle. Talked about the special teams. Team has given up a PP goal in each of their three games. Talked to what Tyler Motte brings to the PK. Was hoping that we would have seen him sometime this trip. Jeff’s hunch is that we won’t see him as he isn’t with the team currently. Talked about Hamonic and his leave of absence. Something doesn’t pass the smell test with the word “temporary”. Says we are going down the same road as last year. He was dreadful to start the season.

The radio voice of the Vancouver Whitecaps, Corey Basso joined Matt and Blake after another big win by the team over SKC. Talked about the roller coaster of a season it has been. Says he doesn’t know if it would be the same if they didn’t come back to BC Place and were still in Salt Lake. One can only wonder what the season would have looked like had they been here the entire time. Talked about the team being in lock-step with those teams around them. Talked about Russell Teibert. There has been some criticism of him but when he scores, they are big goals. Ran through the schedule and how it could play out. Talked about Vanni Sartini and if he has a shot at the permanent job. Says that he has a different approach than that of Dos Santos.

  • October 15 2021 - Jeff Paterson (Canucks Reporter), Rick Dhaliwal (Co-Host Donnie & Dhali), John Herdman (Canadian Men’s National Team Head Coach), Gregg Bell (Seahawks Reporter)

Rick Dhaliwal joined the show and started off chatting about Brock Boeser. Says he wouldn’t put Boeser in unless he is 100%. Just one little thing to get it past. They’ll hope for tomorrow but they are really hoping it can be this weekend. Talked about the back story with Zach MacEwen. He just couldn’t become an everyday player with Travis Green as the coach. Talked about about Abby is hunting high and low for players after losing a couple on waivers. Guys like MacEwen, Gadjovich and Lind were going to be familiar names in the Lower Mainland. That being said, Lockwood is there, Klimovich is there for now. Will need to monitor him in the next 2 to 3 weeks. Talked about broadcasting crews and the difficulties that go with travel in covid.

Tacoma Tribune Seahawks Beat Reporter, Capt. Gregg Bell joined the show to set up the Seahawks game this weekend and started off by chatting about Geno Smith and his chances. It’ll be more difficult without a defence and Chris Carson. It’ll be the run game and defence that will decide the winner, not Geno. Chris Carson is highlighting the problem with guaranteeing money for running backs. This seahawks team is so flawed on both sides of the ball. They could have all of the greats at QB at one time but it doesn’t matter with all their short comings elsewhere. Gregg thinks RW3 will still be there on the sideline wearing pads and all that. Talked about the Kraken and how much he is enjoying hockey in Seattle.

Canadian Men’s National Team Head Coach, John Herdman joined Matt and Blake to talk about the incredible run of form that he says has been a wonderful experience. To be able to get on the front foot at the Azteca. He knows they have the talent who have the license to get at it. Talked about the win vs Panama at home. It had a little bit of everything. Including goals, which is what people pay to see. Talked about the melee down in the corner and what happened. When one goes down everyone comes in. Talked about the Davies goal and the madness surrounding it. Just to see him do it at home was special. Coach says it’ll mean nothing if it doesn’t go. Talked about the next home game in EDM. Having Davies go back home with be inspiring. He has been there with 60K fans for the women. Talked about potentially coming to BC Place in January. Says that he can’t confirm or deny but he would love to. There is a lot that goes into picking venues, including travel of the team and incoming players.

  • October 14 2021 - Wyatt Arndt (The Athletic Vancouver), Thomas Drance (The Athletic), Jeff Paterson (Canucks Reporter)

Thomas Drance of the Athletic joined Matt and Blake on the road. Started off with the poll question and what was the best part of the game last night. Talked about the hit on Duncan Keith. Says it’s hard to beat. Practically he is going with the effort of Thatcher Demko. Talked about when we may see Boeser back and what we saw from Chiasson. Drancer really like Pettersson’s 5 on 5 game.

The Stanchion, Wyatt Arndt joined Matt and Blake. Started off by saying the biggest takeaway from the game last night is that we are now building a statue of Tyler Myers. Was impressed, despite the penalty attempt, with Garland. Talked about Höglander and how he is a micro-stats dream. Wyatt says he has been off to the races since the start of last years shortened season. Says he almost feels bad for Chiasson who is plugging into Boeser spot in the lineup until he gets here. A bit of concern with JT Miller who brought his f-bomb season to the first game. Talked about the ‘Armies’ and what goes into creating them.

Jeff Paterson joined the show in his regular slot. Couldn’t help but bring up the ARI game that is ongoing and the performances of former Canucks. Talked about the post game show, the show you want when you want it. Talked about the season opener and says he will take a point when it didn’t look like they would have. JPat says that Garland needed to put that shoot-out goal away when they had a chance to take the game. Talked about the lack of production from the forward group. Says it is nice that the goals came from the back end but that there is another side to that coin. Talked about Burroughs and that we saw what Travis Green has been talking about. JPat talked about Conor Garland and his workload last night.

Another entertaining Take 5 Thursday that will see either Matt or Blake be the first 2 10 wins.
