Classic Radio 02-28-25 - Life at the South Pole, Violin Returned, and Hiring a Maid

Listen Later

A Funny Friday

First a look at this day in History.

Then Fred Allen, originally broadcast February 28, 1940, 85 years ago, Life at the South Pole.   Fred interviews the assistant superintendent of the Statue of Liberty, a Town Hall Morality Play, a round table discussion about mothers-in-law. "Admiral Allen Was Leading A Dog's Life, So They Left Him At The Pole," an Antarctic drama by the Mighty Allen Art Players.

Followed by Jack Benny, originally broadcast February 28, 1937, 88 years ago, Jack’s Violin is Returned. Jack has gotten a letter from Mary, who is in New York. Kenny Baker sings, "Beautiful Lady," and brings his girlfriend Lena to the show. Jack finally plays "The Bee".  Pat C. Flick appears as a detective.

Then Mr Ace and Jane starring Goodman and Jane Ace, originally broadcast February 28, 1948, 77 years ago, Hiring a Maid. Mr. Ace tells Jane he's bringing home an important client to dinner and warned Jane to be careful of what she said. And Jane replied, "Don't worry, I've got more brains in my little finger than I have in my entire head." And during dinner, she proved it. Or as Mr. Ace puts it, "How to grow old gracefully in one hour."

Finally Claudia, originally broadcast February 28, 1949, 76 years ago, Surprising Mama. A surprise visit to Mama.
