Classics You Slept Through: Episode 44 - A Princess of Mars (Chapters 1 -7)
Today we're kicking off our seventh (!) book, A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Originally serialized in 1912, it was published as a novel in 1917 and follows the adventures of John Carter as he mysteriously finds himself on Mars.
It's pulp, it's fluff, it's adventure... but is it still fun in the modern age? Listen along as we find out!
If you're inclined to read along, the book is available on Project Gutenberg.
As always, keep up with us on our socials:
Before we begin our seventh (!) book, A Princess of Mars, we thought it might be useful to give a brief indexing of the titles we've read and where you can quickly find them.
Episode 2: Call of the Wild by Jack London
Episode 7: The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Episode 12: The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells
Episode 17: Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Episode 28: The Awakening by Kate Chopin
Episode 35: Dracula by Bram Stoker
Thanks for listening this far, and looking forward reading and discussing more books with you all!

After much delay (and getting our parents settled into their new house!) the penultimate section of Dracula is here!
Before Lucy can cause further mischief among the children of London, Van Helsing and the boys are going to have to deal with her - and eventually, the Count himself!
Hang on, Halloween's coming, and we're nearing the end of this one!
Classics You Slept Through: Episode 38 - Dracula Discussion 2 (Chap. 8 - 14)
Pretty straightforward plot advancement this episode, as the ladies take center (?) stage. Well, they're discussed by the guys a lot, anyway!
We'll go though Lucy's slow conversion, Mina's marital bliss (or obliviousness?), Renfield's motivations, plus a mailbag reevaluation of the conclusion of The Awakening.
Note: this week's reading will be delayed a day or two, due to computer repair issues on my end. Sorry! - K
Classics You Slept Through: Episode 37 - Dracula (Chapters 8 - 14)
This section has sorrow, sadness, foreshadowing, and lots and lots of "I'll tell you later" moments to build the tension!
Lots of focus on the ladies this time around, as Mina and Lucy take center stage (if not always the narrator's role)
Listen in, read along, send us your thoughts, and we'll talk about everything next week!
Classics You Slept Through: Episode 36 - Dracula Discussion 1 (Chapters 1 - 7)
Tried a bit of a different discussion format for this episode. As this book is an epistolary novel (told through letters and diary entries), the narrative has to be pieced together a bit. There are gaps in time that you as a reader need to fill in, and the narration voice shifts frequently.
This first section is the most egregious in the book, with things told out of order, so for our discussion, we've attempted to recreate the actual timeline of what is happening in the story, chronologically. We'll jump around the first seven chapters, tying in what's going on outside of Transylvania, as it intersects with Jonathan Harker's adventures at Castle Dracula.
Let us know how we did, and join us tomorrow as we read up through chapter 14!
