My guest today is the Chief of Minority Business and Workforce (division office of economic impact and diversity) at the US DOE, Shalaya Morissette. Prior to her role at the DOE Shalaya was the Senior Technical Inspector at the Gas Pipeline Safety group for National Grid USA. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a Master's in Education from Cambridge College and is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology with Excelsior College.
On this episode of the Clean Power Hour, Shalaya joins Tim Montague to discuss opportunities that minority groups in the US have when it comes to the clean energy transition through the DOE, how to convince people of color to take up the clean power baton, and much more.
We must become more intentional about diversity and inclusion in clean energy and Ms. Morisette’s work is at the center of this. Clean energy is still dominated by white men. Blacks represented 8 percent of clean energy while they are 13 percent of the workforce. According to a report by the National Association of State Energy Officials, only 25 percent of energy workers are female, compared to an overall average of 47 percent in the workforce. Given the incredible job growth of the energy sector, and the expected growth thanks to current government policies, the lack of diversity threatens women, Hispanics, and Black workers in particular.
As the United States looks to build back a better, cleaner, more equitable economy, a renewed focus on increasing diversity in the clean energy sector should be an economic imperative. The US Department of Energy foresaw this need and released its first-ever Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Strategic Plan to underscore the Department’s commitment to creating a workplace that celebrates Americans of all backgrounds in September 2022.

Behind the meter, the wind has some vexing characteristics that until now have kept it largely off the playing field for large facility operators. One Energy has seemingly cracked the code by offering a bespoke, white-glove approach. Their 1.5 MW turbines produce up to 5 million kWh per year of on-site Clean energy (note the high capacity factor). They install, own, and operate turbines and sell a PPA to their industrial customers.
My guest today is Jereme Kent, founder, and CEO of One Energy. Jereme is a wind industry veteran of 16 years.
One Energy is an industrial power company that helps large energy users build modern, tailored, on-site power grids for their facilities. Jereme Kent is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of One Energy Enterprises Inc. Prior to founding One Energy, Jereme ran construction of several of the world’s largest wind projects for utility-scale construction firms including RMT, M.A. Mortensen, and D.H. Blattner, and has overseen more than half a billion dollars in wind turbine construction projects.
In this episode of the Clean Power Hour, he joins Tim Montague to discuss whether it is possible to break the 2-cent PPA barrier with small wind, the pros and cons of behind-the-meter wind vs behind the meter solar, and much more.

In this episode, I was interviewed by James McWalter, CEO of Paces AI and host of the Carbotnic Podcast where he has conversations with experts in cleantech. We discuss how I got into the solar industry, why I am a mission-driven entrepreneur and solar developer, how you too could get into the solar industry, and much more.
My solar roots go back to my childhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I was building solar hot water panels and solar cookers at age 10 with my dad. Lots of sunshine in the Land of Enchantment!
Why I waited until 2016 to ride the PV pony is anybody's guess. Enjoy and happy #Thanksgiving to all my listeners, customers, friends, and colleagues. We have much to be grateful for.

Long-term energy storage is vital for higher penetration of wind and solar that will clean the grid. Luckily, we have a variety of technologies at our fingertips that just need to be deployed for large-scale testing. Over the next decade, the global market potential for long-duration grid storage is expected to grow as much as 140+ gigawatts (GW).
Hydrostar uses patented Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage technology to store energy using air and water in an engineered cavern. They aim to be the world’s leading developer of utility-scale energy storage facilities. Advantages include low cost per KWh, long asset life, and flexible siting.
The A-CAES provides long-duration energy storage (4-24 hr duration) like pumped hydro while having zero emissions by using surplus wind or solar electricity as fuel. Their solution is more flexible to a site than pumped hydro and more cost-effective than batteries at a large scale with a life span of 50+ years.
Curt VanWalleghem is the Co-Founder and CEO of Hydrostor. He holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and an MBA. Prior to Hydrostor, Curt held positions at nuclear generator Bruce Power and in Deloitte’s Corporate Strategy Consulting Practice.
On this episode of the Clean Power Hour, he joins Tim Montague to discuss their patented A-CAES technology, the 500 MW Willow Rock project, the future of long-term energy storage, and much more.
The Willow Rock Energy Storage Center is a utility-scale A-CAES facility that is under active development in Kern County, California, USA. The proposed facility will provide up to 500 megawatts (MW) of new electrical capacity, allowing California’s attractive and growing solar and wind resources to be directly converted into a reliable, on-demand peaking capacity for the Los Angeles region and the broader California grid. This project will store excess generation from California solar and wind projects during periods of low customer demand by compressing air and storing it on the project site.
Listen in to learn more about long-term energy storage and this unique technology developed by Hydrostor.

We're tripling the solar industry in the next five years, so speed is vital for the installers and EPCs that form the backbone of the solar industry. Enter Aduu Solar Engineering with their quick turnaround, white-glove concierge service that allows installers to focus on what they do best, rolling trucks and crews as fast as they can, installing gigawatts of distributed solar that is cleaning the grid one rooftop at a time.
Kiya Segni, co-founder and CEO, parlayed his career in cybersecurity at the Dept of Defense into founding and growing a small solar engineering and design firm. Aduu has carved out a customer base in residential solar by offering 24-hr turnaround, high-quality construction plansets that get his customer's projects permitted the first time, every time.
Kiya came to the US as a recent high school graduate and his years of catholic school in Ethiopia paid off. While much of his youth in rural Africa was spent chopping wood and carrying water, it was his sharp mind and passion for technology that propelled him toward a future in the United States.
When he graduated high school with honors he relocated to the US, following his father who had settled in the Washington DC area as a political refugee. Kiya was soon accepted and got a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland and shortly thereafter went to work at the DOD. But his heart was in clean energy and the energy transition would not wait.
Ten years after he moved to the US he established Aduu Solar with his friend and fellow Ethiopian, Waqgari Regassa, a software engineering graduate from George Mason University. The two had become fast friends in the DC area and shared a passion for sustainability and technology.
Kiya Segni moved to the United States aged 18 from his home country Ethiopia due to political tensions. He joined college to study Electrical engineering and that was when he got introduced to the solar industry. He got an internship in a solar company and got to work for them for some time when he learned how to do PV designs. After some time he quit his job there to start his own company, Aduu Solar and Engineering.
In this episode of the Clean Power Hour, Kiya joins Tim Montague to discuss his background, why and when he started Aduu solar, the experience of a start-up company in the solar industry, and much more.
