The government, local organizations and experienced professionals have social, educational and cultural issues to address in the treatment of HIV-positive women and children, both in Rwanda and the United States. In Rwanda, the powerful cultural stigmas of HIV and AIDS hinder patients from seeking help, and PTSD and depression are frequent comorbid conditions encountered particularly in adolecent girls who have never experienced childhood milestones. Dr. Mardge Cohen, Founder of WE-ACTx, discusses these challenges and her organization's work to counter them. Dr. Maurice Pickard hosts.

Dr Mardge Cohen discusses the history of genocide rape in Rwanda, 1994, and the legacy for the HIV-positive women and girls that have survived. While the perpetrators of these crimes received appropriate care in prisons, the victims tragically did not. Dr. Cohen founded WE-ACT (Women's Equity in Access to Care and Treatment) which has extended its medical missions into Rwanda by opening clinics devoted to the care and treatment for these neglected women and children.
