The Chicago Teachers Union has voted to return to classrooms while rank-and-file members vote on a proposed agreement with the city. 

The CTU Chief of Staff says Covid-19 testing in schools will increase and that the school district is committed to providing more KN95 masks. 

More than 340,000 students missed four days of classes since teachers voted to teach remotely over Covid concerns and the district responded by canceling classes. 

Teachers will be back in the classroom Tuesday and students are scheduled back Wednesday.

US health insurers must cover over-the-counter home Covid-19 tests starting Saturday, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday. 

No doctor’s order, prescription or office visit will be required, and the tests won’t be subject to copays or deductibles. Insurers will be required to pay for eight tests per covered person per month, either by covering the cost up-front or by reimbursing the insured person through a claim. There’s no limit on the number of tests that will be covered if a doctor or other medical professional orders or gives them after an office visit. 

“This is all part of our overall strategy to ramp up access to easy-to-use, at-home tests at no cost,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in the release.

Robert Durst, the eccentric millionaire who fascinated viewers as the subject of HBO's documentary series "The Jinx" before being convicted last year of murder, has died in a California prison hospital, according to his longtime attorney Dick DeGuerin. He was 78.

Durst, who had been housed at the California Health Care Facility in Stockton, died of natural causes at 6:44 a.m. on Monday, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The coroner in San Joaquin County will determine an exact cause of death.

Serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, Durst contracted Covid-19 in October. The real estate heir also suffered from a multitude of other ailments, including bladder cancer.

An autopsy was performed Monday morning on Bob Saget, according to a statement from the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office.

There is no evidence of drug use or foul play in the death of Saget, who was found dead in an Orlando hotel room Sunday, according to the statement released by the medical examiner’s office. 

“The cause and manner of death are pending further studies and investigation which may take up to 10-12 weeks to complete," he added.

A malfunctioning electric space heater in a bedroom was the source of an apartment building fire Sunday in the Bronx that killed 17 people, including 8 children, making it one of the worst fires in the city's history, New York Mayor Eric Adams said Monday. 

Adams revised the death toll Monday down from 19, saying it was an evolving situation. A day earlier, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said 32 people had been taken to hospitals in life-threatening conditions.

Bob Saget, the comedian and actor arguably known best by audiences as wholesome patriarch Danny Tanner on the sitcom "Full House," has died, according to a statement from the Orange County Sheriff's Office in Orlando, Florida. He was 65.

The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner, the Sheriff's office added.

Saget was in Florida as part of his comedy tour. According to tour dates pinned to his Twitter account, he performed Saturday night at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

A major fire in a residential apartment building in the Bronx in New York City on Sunday left 19 people dead, Mayor Eric Adams told CNN. Nine of them are children, a city official with direct knowledge told CNN.

The blaze sent 32 people to hospitals with life-threatening conditions, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said earlier Sunday. Adams said a total of 63 people were injured.

At least 54 people were injured in a 5-alarm fire in the Bronx in New York City, the FDNY told CNN on Sunday.

About 200 members of the New York City Fire Department were on the scene of the fire, which took place on the third floor of a 19-story residential apartment building. The fire has been "knocked down," the FDNY said.

The three White men who chased and murdered Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced to life in prison Friday in a south Georgia courthouse for the 25-year-old's murder in 2020.

Travis McMichael, 35, his father, Gregory McMichael, 66, and neighbor William "Roddie" Bryan, 52, were convicted in November on a raft of charges, including felony murder, for Arbery's death.

Judge Timothy Walmsley sentenced Travis McMichael and Gregory McMichael to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He sentenced Bryan to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Bryan, who is 52 years old, will be eligible for parole under Georgia law only after he has served 30 years in prison because he was convicted of serious violent felonies.

Sidney Poitier, whose elegant bearing and principled onscreen characters made him Hollywood's first Black movie star and the first Black man to win the best actor Oscar, has died. He was 94.

Clint Watson, press secretary for the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, confirmed to CNN that Poitier died Thursday evening.

Poitier overcame an impoverished background in the Bahamas and a thick island accent to rise to the top of his profession at a time when prominent roles for Black actors were rare. He won the Oscar for 1963's "Lilies of the Field," in which he played an itinerant laborer who helps a group of White nuns build a chapel.
