Southern Oddities

Cocaine Bear - Lexington, Kentucky

Listen Later

Lexington..is the second largest city in Kentucky...and the 60th largest city in the United States. Known as the "Horse Capital of the World", it is the heart of the state's Bluegrass region with many notable locations.. Like the Kentucky Horse park, The Red Mile, the University of Kentucky, and Transylvania University, with its Monroe Moosnick Museum, which was featured in episode two of Southern Oddities. But while the blue bloods of Kentucky want you to associate their state with thoroughbred race horses, bourbon, or even Abraham Lincoln, one rather famous taxidermized bear has become a state icon. Housed at the brick and mortar store, the Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall, as the locals call him...Cocaine Bear...aka Pablo Escobear. The story behind this stuffed bear is quite interesting and fantastical, and I'm sure your asking yourself why is this stuffed black bear named Cocaine Bear? As you are about to find out, the story of Cocaine Bear is so exciting it could of easily stepped off the pages of a Hollywood script, but in order to tell it we will have to go back to the 1970s and 80s, during the height of cocaine.
