In this episode I am joined by Shaquille Whatarangi. She shares about her grandmother was institutionalised due to her gifts being suppressed and unable to use them, how that has affected the current generation in her family, her sister being a Ta Moko artist, how receiving her Moko Kauae has helped her find her voice and how she delved into Te Ao Maori when her whole life had been based on Te Ao Pakeha (western society/living).
Hope you enjoy! Please leave a review on Apple Podcast to help us share this message far and wide!
In this episode I am joined by Rangiamohia from Rotorua! We chat about living in Te Ao Maori then having to attend Catholic school, finding our place within the two worlds of Te Ao Maori and Te Ao Pakeha, shame around not being able to identify as Maori and how older generations may have fear around younger people carrying moko kauae.
Thank you for being here!
In this episode I am joined by Tuitata Tarapata from Hamilton, NZ. She has had her moko kauae for 8 months now and shares how confronting it has been to gain attention and what it means for her to lead her family. We chat about normalising moko kauae and how uncomfortable it can be to go out in public in the beginning and the fears that come up for us.

Kia ora whanau! Welcome to the first episode of this Moko Kauae series where I (Vanessa) will be interviewing women who have carry a moko kauae. I wanted to have a platform for these women's stories to be heard and as a collective we will be able to educate others on what this taonga means to us.
I am joined by 19yr old Maumahara from Gisborne. We discuss what is was like for her growing up, what is a colonised way of thinking, connecting back to our culture, shame around wanting to connect back with our roots, what carrying her moko kauae means to her and so much more.
A reminder that each individual that I interview is simply sharing their story and what they believe to be true to them. This is not about finding out what the right answer is as I feel the right answer is what each individual chooses to believe.
Nga mihi xx

Wow! What a conversation. Firstly I would like to thank my mother Ani for being so open and honest about this topic. It's not very often you can get a mother and daughter sharing in the way we did.
Mum shared about how she felt when she found out I was sexual abused. We both looked back and pieced together the pieces that were missing.
She also shares tools that have helped her with her own healing.
This podcast is not here to trigger you, that is not my intention. I want to open up this conversation so those who have experienced sexual trauma no longer feel shame.
