#elonmusk #tesla #salary

Tesla has announced a new compensation plan for Elon Musk: he’ll only get paid if he reaches certain exorbitant milestones, including a Tesla market valuation of $650 billion.

The company’s market valuation goals start at $100 billion and go up in $50 billion increments. (They climb to $150 billion, and so on until the $650 billion mark.) Tesla has a dozen market valuation goals and a dozen revenue and adjusted profit targets. The profit goals are designed to ensure that the company is “also executing well on both a top-line and bottom-line basis” as the company grows in valuation.

For hitting these goals, Musk would receive 1.69 million shares of the company (about 1 percent). If Tesla were valued at $650 billion, that would make it one of the five largest companies in the US, and bigger than Amazon, which currently has a market cap of $640 billion.

Tesla’s market cap is currently sitting at around $59.4 billion, which is slightly higher than Ford’s valuation of $47.7 billion but lower than General Motors’ $61.5 billion valuation. Musk is essentially saying that Tesla can be 10 times bigger than GM, though GM produces exponentially more cars and is profitable, while Tesla is neither. The New York Times notes that “experts would contend [the $650 billion valuation] is laughably impossible,” but said that even reaching several of the targets would still net Musk billions of dollars.

A Stanford study examining software engineering productivity, conducted on over 50,000 software engineers across hundreds of companies, has found that around 9.5% of engineers contribute minimal work.

Ghost engineers, as the research named them, receive full salaries and cost companies billions each year. To draw a comparison with 10x engineers, they’re called 0.1 engineers because their output equals 0.1 median engineer’s work.

Rumble, the video streaming platform that’s become the home for right-wing personalities like Tucker Carlson, Steve Bannon, and Tim Pool as well as full-throated racists like Nick Fuentes, has a new member joining its ranks: Dr Disrespect. The streamer announced the news via social media and Rumble confirmed it in a press release, stating that the streamer will provide a mix of free and paid content for the platform as well as “acting as an advisor and helping to build the Rumble Gaming community.”

The move to Rumble is the latest development in the Dr Disrespect streaming saga that began four years ago. In 2020, Dr Disrespect, whose real name is Herschel “Guy” Beahm, was banned from Twitch with little explanation mere months after signing a multi-million dollar exclusivity deal. Earlier this year, The Verge and other outlets broke the news that the reason for his ban was due to inappropriate conversations Beahm had with a minor.

Hey Strangers,

#asmongold #hasanpiker #Adpocalypse

The situation mirrors the infamous YouTube “Adpocalypse” of 2017, where many creators lost monetization due to advertiser concerns. However, the Twitch scenario appears more targeted, focusing specifically on political content rather than affecting all creators.

Many Twitch viewers mock the initial overreaction, while others express worry about the future of political discourse on the platform. There’s ongoing debate about whether Twitch might create a separate category for political content with limited advertising options.

Political streamers may need to weigh the benefits of using accurate tags against potential loss of ad revenue. Some worry that Twitch might even apply these tags without streamer consent in the future.

Bitcoin rose to a fresh record high just shy of $95,000 after a report that Donald Trump's social media company was in talks to buy crypto trading firm Bakkt (BKKT.N), opens new tab boosted expectations of a crypto-friendly regime under his incoming administration.

Bitcoin , the world's biggest and best-known cryptocurrency, has more than doubled this year. It was last at $93,709, up 1.6%, after hitting an all-time peak of $94,982.37.

The Financial Times said Trump Media and Technology Group (DJT.O), opens new tab, which operates Truth Social, is close to an all-stock acquisition of Bakkt, which is backed by NYSE-owner Intercontinental Exchange (ICE.N), opens new tab.

Bitcoin has soared more than 40% since the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election, as traders bet that Trump's stated commitment to support cryptocurrencies would lead to a less restrictive regulatory environment, lifting the sector overall.

"The rise of bitcoin over the past 15 years is due to an innovation that cannot be recreated: decentralized electronic cash," wrote Nikhil Bhatia, founder of The Bitcoin layer, a research provider analyzing bitcoin through a global macroeconomic lens, in emailed comments.

Hey Strangers,

#blackfriday #bills #speeding

According to data science experts from ITMAGINATION, during Black Friday 2020, prices of select household appliances and electronics were on average over 3% higher compared to their minimum price in the preceding month. The discrepancy between prices grows when we consider the preceding 90-day period, where prices were higher by an average of over 8% during Black Friday 2020 than the minimum price in the preceding 90 days. Interestingly, the average discount advertised on products was less than 5%, with only 32% of all products reaching their lowest price point compared to the previous 30 days.

We also noticed a similar trend of price movements throughout Black Week. Our analysis shows that the average prices during Black Week were higher by 1.8 percent versus the lowest price from last month and higher by more than 7 percent when compared to the lowest price points observed in the 3 months leading up to Black Week. Taking into account the minimum values from the weeks leading up to mass sales, contrary to popular theory, there are no significant discounts during Black Week.

Hey Strangers,

#halloween #christmas #light

Thursday night, trick-or-treaters will be out and about in their costumes looking for sweet treats amongst the decorated houses. And there’s a price that comes with those Halloween traditions. The National Retail Federation estimates total Halloween spending will reach $11.6 billion this year.

Decorations alone are expected to run a total tab of $3.8 billion.

From sinister graveyards to spooky tunnels, Halloween decorating is serious business for some.

“We’ve been putting this together now for about 20 years,” Sioux Falls decorator Jeff Waltrip said. “It started with a neighbor of mine, Garrett down the block, and we sort of had a competition kind of built up over about five or ten years and eventually a lot of people on the block joined in.”

Hey Strangers,

#blackops #cheating #gaming

Activision says it has “disabled a workaround to a detection system” in Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Warzone that led to legitimate players getting banned by the Ricochet anti-cheat system. The company says the problem “impacted a small number of legitimate player accounts,” and all accounts affected were restored.

However, zebleer, who runs the Phantom Overlay store selling cheats, claims the problem is much bigger than Activision’s post makes it seem. In a detailed post on X, they write that when Ricochet scanned the memory of a player’s computer to find known cheat software, one of the signatures it scanned for was a plaintext string reading:

54 72 69 67 67 65 72 20 42 6f 74 (Trigger Bot)

As a result, zebleer says that “for quite some time,” it has been possible to get someone permanently banned simply by sending them a friend request with the phrase or posting a message like “Nice Trigger Bot dude!” in the game’s chat since it would then show up in their memory and get scanned by Ricochet.

Hey Strangers,

#elonmusk #pay #trump

“I was in shock and disbelief,” says a paid door knocker flown to Michigan to help turn out the vote for former president Donald Trump on behalf of Elon Musk’s America PAC.

In Michigan, canvassers and paid door knockers for the former president, contracted by a firm associated with America PAC, have been subjected to poor working conditions: A number of them have been driven around in the back of a seatless U-Haul van, according to video obtained by WIRED, and threatened that their lodging at a local motel wouldn’t be paid for if they didn’t meet canvassing quotas. One door knocker alleges that they didn’t even know they were signing up for anything having to do with Musk or Trump.

A representative for Musk and America PAC did not return a request for comment.

The contract these door knockers signed with Blitz Canvassing, which is a subcontractor of Musk’s America PAC, says they are “expected to maintain a 17-22% engagement rate during the campaign,” which is a high target relative to the number of people who typically open their door for a stranger. A group of out-of-state America PAC canvassers were told during a recent team meeting that if they didn’t hit their targets, which the door knocker says were more than 1,000 a week on total doors knocked, the organization would stop paying for their motel rooms.

The UK parliament is considering clamping down on how young people use smartphones. A bill brought forward by a Labour member of parliament proposes both banning phones in schools and raising the age at which children can consent to social media companies using their data.

Calls for smartphone bans have been growing in the UK, driven by fears that the devices are driving a decline in kids’ mental health and ability to focus. Smartphone Free Childhood, a prominent pressure group inspired by Jonathan Haidt’s book The Anxious Generation, calls for parents to delay getting smartphones for their children until they are at least 13. Florida has already passed a law that bans under-14s from holding social media accounts, and Australia is considering similar restrictions.

But academics warn that smartphone and social media bans are unlikely to be a catch-all solution to the problems facing young people. Experts on the impact of digital technologies argue that the legislation could end up shutting children out from the potential benefits of smartphones, and that more pressure should be put on social media companies to design better digital worlds for children.
